Need advice: jumping up to face, etc. Gracie is almost 6 months old, still working on the housebreaking but for the most part she is doing well. My other concern is that when we sit down on the sofa or get in to bed, she likes to run up to "your" face and lick and nip (not hard). I usually put my hand up or pick her up and put her next to me and say no (firmly but not yell). I usually give her a toy or something to distract her. I know it could be an attention thing too, but I don't want her doing it to us and other people. The other concern is that when she gets a toy (doesn't matter which one), she brings it back and puts it right on your hand, if laying in bed -- near or on your face and proceeds to chew and play with it. This can be extremely annoying as well. Also, if I am sitting on the sofa, she will come and crawl up and sit on my chest next to my head or when I am typing on the laptop, she will sit in between me and the laptop on my stomach/chest. What else can I do to correct and stop this? Thank you. |
What I did with jumping or going in my face is just very consistantly just keep saying off and he caught on pretty fast. And for trying to get attention, of course after I played with him alot, I start ignoring, works great,lol it taught him that I play with him when I want and not when he's all over me and puting toys on me. Now when i'm busy and he's annoying me and bringing me toys all I have to say is "I'm ignoring you" and he'll actualy leave and go lay down, haha because he learned when I say that it really means i'm not going to play now. And of course when i'm done I play with him:) So maybe you could try that with your baby, at first she won't understand but after a while of hearing "I'm ignoring you" it will click and she'll know when mommy says that I have to play by myself for a little bit. Thank you very much, I will definitely try using "off" as opposed to no. I appreciate the suggestions and I know it takes some time. I raised my jack russell from 8 weeks, but that was over 13 years ago, and he is slightly deaf and slightly blind in one eye, so he is more docile and not as rambunctious. But most of all been out of practice on "how to raise a puppy." :) |
My Lils still do some of those things, they just want to play and have fun... the nipping they eventually grow out of it... she is a little puppy still. |

He is asleep on my lap right now, so I just set my tiny laptop on top of him. He doesn't mind, as long as he is in physical contact with me at all times. As for the toys, he also brings them to the bathroom and leaves them as gifts outside the shower door or whomps you in the foot with them when you are otherwise indisposed! |
Mine too My 1 year old named Gracie also does the same things. We got her from a lady who had sick parents and the first 4 months of her life she was crated constantly. She now jumps in your face and all over guests and is very dominent to my 5 year old male. She also wants to be in my lap all the time and runs off my 5 yr old male when he wants to get into my lap. We have tried no and constantly putting her down or moving her out of our face telling her no...doesn't seem to be sinking in. Her other owner played with her with a sock so now every time she gets a sock she doesn't want to stop playing and barks non stop to get u to continue. Needless to say I need HELP ! My other Yorkie was never like this :( |

Wow so happy to have found this discussion. I got a mix Yorkie/Chihuahua "male" puppy. Have never had a male, so I was thinking this was the way males were. Sammy is very dominate and we are working with him. He is about 17 weeks old and a very energetic puppy. He does the in your face, nipping (but is getting better at that) jumping and no respector of guest. Potty training is getting better but he is very bossy with my 8 yr old poddle. He can't stand for her to have "any" attention or treat. I forgot what a puppy was like but he is more demanding than any pup I have had. Hope this thread keeps going, because I have regretted adopting him many times. |
Cody is a rescue, his prev. owner surrendered him when he was 2.5 yo, he came to me a very spoiled child, he did that jumping in the face lick & nip your lips, not a hard nip. He just turned 6 yo and still jumps in my face but I got him to stop the nipping, he does it when he can't get his own way, when I tell him "no", or "you have to wait" he gets mad lol, my fault he's still jumping, I get hysterical when he does it cos it really doesn't bother me and he doesn't do it to company. |
For me consistency is everything. I've had Zeke in my lap most all the time when he's not eating or walking for two weeks now and have been fine with it since he was an adoptee. However, I start getting cramps from not moving enough so I am starting to limit him to 30 min of lap time several times a day. What's happening though is when I put him down he just sits and stares at me. So now I'm saying "down" whenever he does this and he is just starting to move on. My hope is by saying down and then ignoring him he'll stop the staring. Fingers crossed. |
