New Yorkie Pup and potty training problem Hello I am new to the forum I previously had a Yorky for 13 1/2 years which I lost a little over a month ago. I crate trained my previous dog by taking him outside to a potty area every 1-2 hrs and bringing him back in to his small kennel or my lap with short periods out for play, eating and water under my direct supervison. When I noticed him pee I would give him the command "go potty" and praise him. I pretty much had him potty trained within 2 weeks. My current yorkie is 15 weeks old and was neutered last week on Tuesday then I brought him home on Friday. I have been using the same technique with my current pet. I walk him outside on a leash. He does not lift his leg so a little hard to see when he is going but I feel under him and almost never does he go outside. He will potty in his kennel and does not seem to mind it. He does not cry and just lays in it either pee or poop. I change the towel in it several times a day. He regularly pees on the carpet even when I am watching before I can get to him and when I think that he is starting to sniff and take him out he does not go. Yesterday I took him out and he did not go so I decided that possibly he did not need to go but put him beside me on a small pillow and after a few minutes he pee of pillow and my leg. I am stumped as what to do next as the book that I have read on training dogs say to kennel train as dogs don't like to go in their house but doesn't seem to be helping in this case. I am not interested in pad training as my previous dog would tear them up and I am retired so I am not away from the house usually for long periods of time. I always take my dog with me if I am leaving for long periods. Thanks for any suggestions. |
first i would like to say i am so sorry for the loss of your first pup. congrats on your new addition.. i dont have any advice accept to say all dogs are different... They dont all fit the same mold. it sounds like this little one is going to be a stubborn one so it will probably take you longer to potty train him... Just be patient and keep doing what you are doing. it sounds like you have a good system but it is going to take time.... good luck |
I found this website was really useful. What if Your Dog has Accidents in his Crate |
Thanks Hulks Mom. I went to the site that you suggested and it mentioned if the dog is repeatedly using his kennel as a bathroom to take out and leave out all towels as I was using in the bottom. Yesterday I took the dog out about every 1-2 hours to pee. At one point he peed on the sidewalk (not the grass). I praised him and took him in and put him in his kennel. Almost as soon as he got in the kennel he peed again(quite a bit) Last night as usual he continues to poop in his kennel at night and also this time also peed. I took him out and after about 5 minutes and no peeing brought him back in and while I was cleaning his kennel and before I could get him back in it he peed in the kitchen! I am about at wits end as this does not seem to be normal dog behavior(at least to me) |
I am sorry to hear you are having problems. Most of all you need to stay calm. He will feed off you. Can I ask where you got him from? |
Are you sure hes not sick? Uti? Maybe you should call your vet. Also id limit him to tile only. Gate him in kitchen. No towell in crate and crate needs to be small. Should not be able to walk around pee and poo and go to dry area to lay down. |
I got him from a Breeder in Indiana. Both his parents where champs. I saw the father and pics of mother both beautiful. I live in Tennessee and drove up to Kentucky to meet breeder and pick up pup. Yes I keep him in small kennel, now without towels in bottom. This morning for first time he did not pee in it last night. I took him outside but did not pee, brought him back inside and back in keenel. He barked and cried and did not like it. About 5 minutes later I decided to take him back outside to try again however he had already peed by that time in his kennel. Took him out and still no peeing. I cleaned his kennel with Natures Miricle and wiped it dry then back inside kennel. Yes I have thought about a urinary infection and he is suppose to go in for last shot later this week. I'm not sure if I can catch a sample as he does not lift his leg and when he pees it is usually when he is in kennel. It is starting to get frustraiting with all the effort he rarely goes outside but I make sure that I do not take it out on him but I think I need to get some help on this one. |
