Puppy behavior
 
Me and my wife are first time dog owners and we have a 4.5 month old male yorkie. I'm not sure where to start we have had him since 13 weeks and started crate/pad training him right away and he is very good with that, a few weeks ago I decided to start traing him for basic commands that's where the fun starts. So far he knows sit very well and is starting to learn lay down but still needs my hand motion, I try to train every night or at least 5 days a week some nights it's very hard because he won't sit still and won't stop jumping all over the place to listen and some times becomes aggressive. Is this normal puppy behavior or should I be doing something different? And how can I start to calm his aggression? And start training him that jumping is not ok.

:thumbup: Bumping so I can read the advice too. My pup is hyper sometimes, that's when I take her outside so she can run and burn off energy. That might help calm him so you can do the training. I'll wait and see what others suggest. :aimeeyork

I take him for walks almost nightly but im not in a position to let him free run in the back yard. I'm moving tomorrow actually and in the new place I can let him run around in the yard.

Another question I have is tonight and other nights when the pup gets a hold of something he's not supposed to have and you finally catch him and take it away he gets extremely aggressive. Anything I can do to stop this behavior.

Thanks for the free bumps hopefully we can all have some nice calm and trained dogs :thumbup:

teaching the "leave it" command is really helpful.
to begin teaching this take 2 treats put one in a hand behind your back, tell your pup to sit , put the other treat on the floor in front of him, and say "leave it" if he sits still for even a second say "good leave it" and at the same time give him the treat from the hand behind your back...
just keep practicing this and soon he will sit still for longer periods...
eventually you will be able to use this command when he gets an object you do not want him to have

What exactly do you mean by aggressive? Puppies are like 2 year olds who put everything in their mouths so if he is biting at you it might be just in fun but I would discourage this by first saying "YIKES" each time his teeth so much as touch you. If that doesn't make him ease up, tell him "NO" firmly and leave the room where he can't follow. Now if he is growling and attacking, that is a different story and I'd be concerned if a 13 week old puppy were exhibiting this behavior. You might need to get an expert in animal behavior help you work this out.

When you catch him with something he's not supposed to have, say "NO NO", take it away and then immediately hand him something he can have that belongs to him, like a toy or a chew stick and tell him that it is his. That's how he will learn what he can and can't play with or chew on. He'll also be more likely to drop what you don't want him to have without the aggressive behavior since he's getting something else he likes and is allowed to have.

To try and answer everything, I will try and replace what he's not supposed to have with a toy and see if that helps. When I try and get things that aren't his away from him that is the only time he is aggressive, other than that he is very sweet and loving. I will be working with him on the leave it command next as that one seems most important.
