Potty Training? I have a 12 week old Male yorkie. He is our first yorkie, and the first puppy we have had in many years- and the puppy we had before wasn't trained by me since I was 7 years old then. xD Anyways, when I take him outside, he just follows me. He doesnt sniff around or anything. He has only gone outside once when my mom was out there with him for awhile. My mom thinks the breeder didn't take the pups outside to go potty and just let them go in their pen. I just need to be stern with potty training, as I've heard it can be a challenge with yorkies. Any tips? xD We have puppy pads. But since this is the first day home, im not sure if he will use them. Wouldnt it make sense to put grass on the puppy pad if/when he starts using them, to associate grass with potty? |
One thing that I learned the second time around with our new girl is that crate training is huge! We didn't crate train our first one and he's over 1 year old and still potties in the house ugh. But since we been crate training our girl, she has been having few accidents and been fairly good about going potty on her pad. We crate her at night and she'll slowly fall asleep. We have the crate on the nightstand so she sleeps right next to me. It helps her calm down to be next to me, especially if the TV is on as well. Then about 3-4 hours later she cries. I take her out and put her on her pad. The key with this is PATIENCE lol I've stayed up for 45 mins before, just telling her to potty on her pad and now she usually does it within a minute or two. Try getting her on a schedule and if you can, have scheduled feedings throughout the day. This is when you'll know whether or not they need to go, especially number 2. Since Geno is free fed, we just kept free feeding her so it's a little harder for us but she hasn't been doing too bad. Also after they potty on their pad or outside, LOTS, LOTS, and LOTS of praise and of course treats! :) It's definitely frustrating at times but keep your patience in check and it isn't too bad. Oh also, our girl was doing pretty well going potty outside at the breeders but she was still able to catch on fairly quick to going on potty pads. Also check out a bunch of other threads on here relating to potty training. So many people here give awesome tips that goes completely above and beyond anything I could tell you :) |
