can my yorkie be friends with my cat? help! hello everyone, i am new to this forum. i actually found it while searching for my issue and found a similar but somewhat different situation being discussed previously. anyway, here goes! so, i have recently moved back home to my parents and they have a yorkie, Abbey, approx 5 years old. shes a great dog, but when i moved back i brought my 1 year old cat, Pinot, with me. They are both female, around 10lbs, and never actually "fight" but Abbey is very intimidated by Pinot. Pinot is very curious about Abbey.. she wants to play! but anytime Pinot gets close, Abbey takes off. Some mornings if Abbey sees Pinot at the bottom of the stairs she wont go down. it has only been a little under a month since this new arrangement took place but is it more likely or unlikely that they will ever become friends? will time allow Abbey to adjust to Pinot, or will she just always avoid her? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! thanks everyone! (: ps. another funny (in my opinion) part of this story is that Abbey actually found Pinot! one night, in a rain storm (of course, cliche) my mother had let Abbey outside around 4am. She usually goes potty and comes right back in, especially considering the weather, but no matter how many times my mother called Abbey just kept barking. Upon investigation my mother found a tiny, soaking wet approx. 4 month old kitten under the deck!! She practically jumped into my mothers arms when she reached for her and my boyfriend and i adopted her. i do kind of love the irony haha |
Hi and Welcome to YT! I'd give the cat a small blanket or an old T shirt to sleep on for a few nights then give the blanket or shirt to the dog. This will help the dog to become familiar with the cat's scent... |
hmm.. thats a great idea, ill def give it a try! thanks so much! :) |
Give Pinot lots of escape options and inacessable places to Abbey, Scoobers is scared of cats...neighbors cat tried to give him a new face as a puppy Elvis wants to kills cats...given the chance he just might Princess is curious about them abd interected well with one at the nursing home, she plays too rough though. |
It will definitely take time... But make seeing your kitty a positive experience. Whenever the kitty is in the room, Abby should get treats. If she sees the kitty as a positive thing, she will be more likely to accept her as a family member. |
