She's not a young puppy Hi guys I just got a new dog. She is about a year old. Her previous owner said she was housebroken, also pee pad trained. Which I do not believe. She goes outside sometimes, but I see her sit down so she won't go then acts like she did something bad if she does go. I have see her use the pee pad once & when I tried to praise her she ran away. If she has an accident she hides. I believe she was mistreated about accidents I have another 5 yo. She is pee pad trained & will go outside. Do I need separate pads for each? When she did go on the pad, it was after it was used by my other dog. Then the other one peed on the carpet. How do I get her to go on a pad when she thinks she's going to be punished. So many questions. I need help please. |
oh poor baby, i think you right. It sounds like her previous mistreated her in regards to potty accidents so now she is afraid to go. It is so sad. i am so glad she has a better home now. i think you will just have to start from scratch. just potty train her as if she is a new pup. with patience and understanding she will get it.. |
And treats and lots of praise! Inside and out. I'd use 2-3 peepads till she gets retrained. |
I brought a MUCH older pom into my home (8yrs at the time). She had some of the same issues and I KNOW that she was yelled at and chased when she had an accident. I used my other dogs to help me train her. She went out when they went out, I always knew where she was in the house. They helped me show her that praise, treats, potting outside and being held and loved were all good things. I make a point of not ever raising my voice at her,she just shuts down and wont even move if your voice sounds like it might be angry. At a year, your new baby is just a kid and retraining her may take a bit of time, but she will learn to trust you. |
i adopted my poodle mix when she was 7 months old from the family of her previous owner who had passed away. kaiah was not housetrained and she too would get terrified if she went potty in the house. i felt so sad for her, she was also afraid of loud noises and if you raised your hand over her head too quickly, in our case just to pet her of course.. now she is 3 years old and she is much better. she is happy and relaxed , i have a potty pad in the corner for her which she uses from time to time... |
Oh I forgot to mention, she will not take any of the dog treats I have offered her. I guess I'll have to give her some baked chicken. She does seem to like that. My other dog Angel is just starting to warm up a little to her. So there is some jealousy issues going on still. I have started walking them separately. It seems to help. That way each one gets all the praise when they go. Thanks for your comments, I know I can count on everybody here to help. |
