PetsMart Potty Training Class Opinions?? A friend of mine gave me a flyer she got at PetsMart, advertising a 1 hour potty training obedience class, and I was wondering if any of you have ever done that and if so, what is your opinion about it?? It's only $15 for 1 hour, which sounds very reasonable, but is it worth it? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!! |
I have never taken the class but for just 1 hour of potty training class I would guess it is a class that goes over the basic things about potty training like "be consistent" and other things like that. But they may be able to give you some problem solving ideas if you have problem potty training. But again this group can give you some problem solving ideas too since many of us have been through it. |
My first response was going to be: you can read all you want to about potty training on the internet and/or in a book. The good results are in the "doing" not the in the instructing. But after some thought, I think it might be a good idea for some people for the following reason: they may also teach the way a dog "thinks" and why some things work and don't work because of the dog's thinking. We, as dog owners, sometimes don't understand the subtleties of what our actions are teaching a dog vs what we want the dog to learn. And this gets in the way of effective potty training. Dogs learn very differently than the way humans think, and getting this in the class will be worth the $15. |

I couldn't have said it better. People on here are awesome. we've all been through it with our own children and while some of our opinions may vary they all say pretty much the same. PETsMART? I've heard a lot of good things about their training. The trainers are nice and willing to work with you with some one on one time and so forth. Best of luck. |
i asked the trainer about that class when i signed up for the puppy obedience class. she said it's more of a class for humans than for the puppies, like a potty training seminar. reviewing the do's and don'ts of potty training as well as techniques. we reviewed some of that in puppy training, but not to the level of detail as the potty training class. one of the thing i learned from puppy training at petsmart, which i've never read from a website or book (or maybe i'm just reading the wrong stuff...) is that i should use a different command for pee and poo. the trainer said "go potty" for both is too generic. with puppies it's best for the command-behaviro relation to be as specific as possible. so now i'm using "go potty" for pee and "go poo-poo" for poo. i'm sure they'll go over techniques like that in class. and of course, some people, like me, learn best, when it's demonstrated to me, rather than for me to just read it. it sticks in my head better. :D and for $15, it's not that bad. |
