Won't Accept Treats When Rewarded Sometimes my yorkie doesn't take treats when he obediently potties outside. When I hand him a treat he just sniffs it and turns away. If that keeps happening how will I reward him to teach him what's right and wrong? Or maybe he's just picky? Anyway, if somebody has a similar problem or has any tips please comment. :) |
You don't have to reward with a treat. You can reward with petting, saying Good boy, pats on the head, just you being happy and letting him know is reward enough a lot of the time. I try to stay away from food rewards bc they end up begging for food all the time. When I was training for tricks, I would do it at meal times and use regular kibble and not give "junk food" type treats at all. What kind of treat are you giving BTW? |
When my little Coco (I know Coco is a girl name but he is a male :p) was littler I fed him some pieces of human crackers to see how he would like it and apparently he loved it. So I use those as treats because he doesn't like normal dog treats. But lately he doesn't really eat any treats I hand him, he does only a few times. Btw I dunno if human food is unhealthy for dogs or not, maybe I shouldn't use that. |
The right kind of human food is plenty healthy! It's up to you to decide which is best. What kind of crackers? Plain Cheerios are a favorite around here, that is if your yorkie doesn't have a grain intolerance. Otherwise tiny (I mean REALLY tiny! Like the size of half a #2 pencil eraser) pieces of boiled unsalted no skin chicken breast will make him go crazy! Low fat string cheese (again if he doesn't have dairy intolerance) or pieces of hard boiled egg, home made jerky with no salt or flavorings. Mine go crazy over cucumber, tomatoe, watermelon, mango, carrot, even the white crunchy part on the bottom of the stem of romaine lettuce. Healthier the better. We never give store bought dog treats such as Pupperoni or Milkbone. Too many have by products, corn meal, artificial colors and other yucky stuff. |
I give mine usually Ritz... probably not be the healthiest snack but he seemed to enjoy them lol. I also give him some fruits, mostly tiny bits of apple. Maybe he's changed his taste or something? Tomorrow when I take him out on a potty break I'm gunna try rewarding him with petting and by playing with him. :) |
Maybe just a "good boy" and pat is enough. Some dogs are toy-oriented and love a tugowar or squeaky toy as their reward. Or, he's just nervous at the time or doesn't like your treats. Tibbe won't take some treats either. And he sure won't take them if he's unhappy for being made to come inside or if he's feeling bad or nervous when I offer treats. Might try Cheerios or something like that or just a squeaky toy and see if he's happy. |
Some dogs don't go for treats like others do. Try freeze-dried beef liver, that tends to always be a winner. Petting and praise are also rewards in your dog's mind though. You can plan on doing mini "training sessions" with your puppy when they are a little hungry and more receptive to treats. Maybe give your puppy half its breakfast, then have it do some tricks with treat rewards before giving it the rest of its breakfast. Or, have it do a couple of tricks before a meal (just don't go overboard with training because they ARE hungry after all). |
Has he had any recent bouts of spitting up foam and bile? Is his stool normal - no mucous in or on it? |
