I need some help with my run away Yorkie What does everyone else do?? Bell is bad!! She use to run away when ever she got a chance. But since she has gotten older (2 years old) She really was good for a long time (at least 6 months now) But today, my husband, my daughter, and myself took a long drive to check out my daughters college (where she will be a freshman next year) My mother who is in great shape for 72 was home with Bell and when she went out the back door, so did Bell. I live in a gated community, but its located on a busy street(right outside the gate) and Bell loves to run. I have started to install a fence around my yard but am only 1/3 finished.(it cost my over $2000) for the one section and it will be at least a year before its completed. My poor mother ran after Bell for almost 1 hour, as Bell ran through neighbors yards, street, puddles, and the swamp. My mother told me that nothing she said or did brought Bell back, Until she was tired. I know my Bell is taller than most or your yorkies and she sure is fast and wirey!! But I need to know, What does everyone else do to let their yorkies run?? I would be grateful for any help. :p Thanks |
Only one of my Yorkies like to run away, that would be Jake. Our backyard is fenced in and Jake & Buddy go outside often when the wetaher permits. We have an alarm system and when ever a door is opened it beeps....Jake knows when the front door is opened and he tries every time to get out. I just tell him to come get a treat. This works all the time except the the neighbors female Pomeranian is outside. |
That sounds like Mia! Yikes! Today she had her bath, DD took her potty and she ran, down the street (hill) about 3 houses, then up about 3 , just like lightning. I saw her start off out my window from the computer and ran out to help catch her. She finally listened to me and came home, but it was very scary! I'm planning on putting her in 'school' and I'm hoping that will help. |
I have had Bell run away on me too, And when a car comes down the street I start to really panic! They are so small and so fast a person driving wouldn't even see them running across the street. But I have to do something!! I have thought about the invisible fence, but the piece they have to wear around their necks seems so big. And then you still have to train them!! The only thing Bell really is interested in is COOKIES and the PUPPIES across the street, I told my mother that the next time she should just yell out " Bell do you want to see the puppies" and she'll PROBABLY come. But I would so rather it be that Bell never gets out again. Help!! |
Hi everyone! Bodhi and I are new to this thread, too. I keep Bodhi on a leash constantly when outside. Too many bad experiences with yorkies finding the smallest hole in a fence, or jumping out of the car before I have even collected my purse. There was also a post here recently about someone's yorkie running out when the owner answered the door. She mentioned keeping a leash near the door from then on. I suppose it would be used prior to opening the door. Boy! I hope you come up with a solution for a frightening situation. |
The best thing you could do for your Yorkie would be to buy a baby gate or two and install in the kitchen or a bathroom or whatever room you decide that she can be pinned in. Whenever anyone is even thinking about going out the door (be it to answer it or to get the mail or leave, whatever) put Belle in that room. That way, she is confined and safe from bolting out the door when you least expect it. When your back in and the door is safely shut, let her back out. That;s the best thing you can do to prevent something from happening to her should she bolt out again. |
My first yorkie did all the time. As soon as she see's something interesting she runs off and I couldn't call her back. I got really tired of her doing it so I took her to a dog behavorist and we work it out of her. What we did was lots and lots of recalls. What it involved was putting her on a long leash and calling her to me. As soon as she came, she got a treat. After she was did that consistantly, we started to add distraction( one person walking around the room or bring in a dog). Then the distraction increase and finally we did the whole thing all over again off leash. One of the worst one was placing her in a enclosed field with 20 loose dogs and calling her to me off leash. She has no problem doing it now and I'm not afraid she will run away anymore. I hope this info helps. Good luck with your dog. |
our old house didn't have a backyard and are street was close to a highway my lhasa liked to get out and run to the highway i even had to stop traffic once. we got a rope and tied it to somes poles on the front porch then tied the other end to her leash and put her on the leash. it worked really good she had enough room to run, get in the shade and the sun but couldn't get to the road or the driveway. you could try doing that just make sure she has plenty of room to run but not to get in dangerous places. |
If you are going to tie your dog out on a rope I suggest you use a harness not a collar. Especially if it is going to be unsupervised. I hear about dogs getting tangled up or strangled by the ropes all the time. JUST BECAREFUL!!! |
Please, please, please be careful. Bell sounds a lot like my yorkie Mike. Bigger than average, loved to be outside and run around. The one and only time he ran away he was hit by a car and killed instantly. The grief was unbearable and then add on the tremendous guilt that I didn't keep my baby safe. I like both the baby gate idea and the behaviorist. Take care. |
Gate 3 Attachment(s) I understand your concerns, my little one is 2 years old now and has run away MANY times! He doesn’t look back and I always pray that I catch him before something happens. I finally went onto drsfostersmith.com and bought the Elongate Expandable Gate ($74.99) that I put across my front door so that when the door is open, I do not have to worry about him. It’s probably been about 8 months or so since he’s gotten away.. It’s been a LIFESAVER! |
I agree with the gate! Simon is a runner so I have a baby gate in my hallway so when I open the front door he can't run out! He ran out the door once when we were visiting my aunt and almopst ran into a field of COWS!!! I told Hallie to go get Simon and she did and ran with him all the way back into the house! We are still working on the come command (and he is a year and a half) so I know how scared you must be! good luck |
Can I ask is this something your dogs have always done or did it start later? I had a runaway dog once and it was not fun chasing her for blocks on end. If there were ever a time I wanted to throw something up side her head, two hours of "catch me if you can" was pretty close to the breaking point. It was awful. My first dog (mutt) never, ever ran away from us. She'd never left the front yard regardless of what else was going on and immediately came if you called. Any way Trace doesn't go galloping off, but wondered if this becomes a problem when they are a little older? He's 3 months. Deb (who come to think of it.....would rather clean up pee than chase the dog willy nilly) |

Once in awhile our dog Comic sees a squirrel and takes off out the door. I sceam "TREAT" or "Carrot" and he comes right back. |
When I first adopted Nico he would not leave my side, but when he was about 6 months old he started running. It's been very frightening at times. I have NEVER let him out, it's always friends and family that I can't trust him with. |
When Bell was small she didn't run away, she just ran around.. She sarted to run away when she was about 9 months old (maybe a little older) I don't think she running away as much as shes just running!! Because when she gets tired she listens and lays down.. I have tried to do the thing with her on a long leash and she listens to me, comes right over. But off the leash she is very stubborn  I could be watching TV while laying in bed and call her (she could be no more than a foot away) and she doesn't listen. Unless I have food! AS far as my mother, she is in great shape for 72, but gosh I don't want her running after Bell and have a heart attach or anything  Thanks for the ideas, Keep them coming, and I'll keep trying them :p |
Tucker is a run-away if he gets a chance. He is little but he can run SO fast!! My mom is always afraid he will slip out the door and run away when she keeping my kids. She always puts him in the bathroom when she comes over. There is no way she could catch him with her bad knees. Plus, we live on a farm in the middle of no where. If he ran into the woods, he could really get lost. I wish I knew how to break his behavior. I have enrolled him puppy school so hopefully a trainer can help us. :) Until then, he is on a leash everytime he goes out. |
Please whatever any of you do,,,dont let your yorkie run free,, I lost the most precious thing in my life a few months back,,that was my beautiful little "Jazzy" my lovely little yorkie,,she got loose and got in the road,,she died hours later and I have never been sooooooo heartbroken in my life..I just wanted to die with her. So do whatever it takes to keep your yorkie up,,I wish that I could go back in time and I would of had a gate installed around my house,,they are way tooooo precious to loose. |
Ah, gee! My chihuahua took me on a chase once and we had traffic stopped both ways! I was so scared and embarrassed at the same time. There I was chasing this little thing in circles. She was having the time of her life (she was still a puppy). I soon had a fence put in at that house. When I got Muffin, our yorkie, we had a fenced-in yard for her, but I used to take her out in the big unfenced part of the yard with me (she was a puppy, too) and that soon ended, because she decided to take me on the run of my life. Needless to say, after that she didn't go out without her halter and leash. I read in one of our yorkie books that you should teach them the sit/stay command just for this type situation, but they have to be so old to learn that. |
My dog knows the sit stay command and never pays any attention to it if he gets out of our yard. I would fence your yard. |

She'll be 10 weeks old tomorrow and I'm so proud that she does the sit command for a treat now. Not that she's a dummy! I'm just not the best trainer! ;) I hate to make them work. :D |
My boys used to, not any more My boys did the same thing, they did it the first time at my daughters house in the valley on a totally unfamilar street just blocks from a heavily used freeway. After corraling them that day, I decided that they had to be trained to come when called. I bought a lead (got it from Petedge.com) and hooked it to my belt every minute that I was home with them. I kept them both tied to me, it was long enough for them to go into other rooms, just not too terribly far. Then every once in a while, I would call them, if they did not come immediately, I would "reel" them in. Once they were there, I would praise them, give them a favorite treat and tell them how good they were. Now whenever I call them, they come immediately. This did not happen over night, it took several weeks and now whenever we are out and they are off their leashes, I do a few practice runs with them. They always come when called now. |
How old were they when you taught them?? And how long way the lead?? Bell is very stuborn, If I have treats she will be there in a heart beat, on or off a leash, inside the house. Now outside the house is a different story. On the leash or lead she will come when called off the lead she does what ever she wants, which is usually not what I want. Thanks for the info, I will try it.. Maybe I should try all these ideas now, beacuse Bell is finally pregnant :D and a bit slower these days. |
Sounds like I'm not the only one that has a Sprint Runner. Our yard is fenced, so she can't get too far. When I go outside to feed the big dogs, water some plants, feed the koi, etc, Maggie will dart past me at the storm door, before I even realize it. I am in the process of telling her "Stay" when I am at the door. She just looks at me like, "Sure I'll Stay,--Until You Are Not Looking". |
