Advanced Tricks I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum or the advanced training forum. I was wondering if anyone has ideas for advanced tricks that are mainly for fun? I've come up with these so far: Up: Standing up on the hind legs briefly Paw: While sitting, lifting one paw for me to take in my hand (like shake) Spin: Spin around once, kind of like chasing their tail Step: Side step in the direction indicated Fetch: Retrieve toys that are thrown I considered "Play Dead" but it just seemed too morbid of a concept. I considered "speak," but I don't want to encourage Mishka to become barky. Roll-over would be good. I only have one concern--that Mishka won't be able to do the trick in her old age. Penny knows roll-over, and now that she's old she has trouble doing it. She can only roll half way and we can tell it makes her sad that she isn't doing it right. We let her do her half, help her roll the rest of the way, and then tell her what a good girl she is. She seems happier getting praise after completing the trick with our help, rather than getting praise for just doing half of the trick. Ideas? :) |
Here's a bunch of Jackson's -- but he has a few new ones too besides these. Some of his more "complex" tricks: limping (walking on three legs) play dead (bang bang) hop on my back run backwards circles around my legs turn and reverse (he is about 5-6 feet away from me, turns around and reverses or backs up under my legs) get a tissue when I say 'ah-choo!' pick his toys up and put them away in a box hop on my back covering his eyes say your prayers "cop cop" (his feet on mine, and we walk) skateboarding (still a work in progress) |
Brit, Jackson is so well-trained! You've done a great job with him! |
How did you teach Jackson to put his toys away? I'm interested in teaching that to Mishka. :) |
Tibbe plays dead. You can call it what you want if you teach it but it is just another dog trick to us. I use it all the time when grooming him. Just tell him to "play dead" and he lies right down on his side and is far more patient than he would be when I'm trimming the hair on his feet - because he thinks doing his tricks are fun. And it is so cute seeing him lie down and then remember this trick is different from just lying down on his tummy and so he flips over onto his side and stays there until I say "release". At first I trained him to shut his eyes but found he didn't like to keep his eyes shut much so I just let that part of the trick go. Now he does the play dead trick with those little eyes just looking all around. It's sooooo cute. After teaching the play dead, I taught him to roll on over onto his back and stay there. That is just about my favorite trick of his as he looks so darn cute doing it. I call it the "roll-back-stay" and use a hand gesture and he will just lie down, flip over and stay there on his back. It is darling! He learned that one really quickly. The hardest trick to teach Tibbe was the sit up and beg. His noodle body just couldn't hold him upright for long or he didn't have good balance or both. I didn't work much with him on it and after about a year, with only once a month or so training for a minute or two (we hardly ever practiced it because he just couldn't stay up), he just did it. Now he even will put his paws together and pump them in the begging fashion and can sit up for well over 2 minutes or longer. It is cuter than anything! I don't feel much like training him since had bad hip, surgery, am in PT again so he has never learned many really sophisticated tricks but he knows lots of easy ones and he'd rather train doing tricks and actually perform them than anything else. He loves to play and fetch and do tugowar but he loves doing tricks and training more than playing! |
I have nothing against the trick "play dead." I just can't stand any thoughts of my puppy actually being dead or hurt. Using a command like "play dead" or "bang bang" just makes me think about it too much. I will teach her the command "settle" though. It is great for veterinary procedures and grooming. "Settle" means I want the dog to trust me, and lay on its side and be still. Of course Tibbe has more fun doing tricks than playing, because it makes you so proud! ;) |
Instead of play dead, we do "fainting on smell of bad breath" LOL Uni also knows right hand and left hand. Basketball is her claim to fame. :) |
Some of my favorite tricks Lilo does is Basketball Skateboarding Closing the door from the other side of the room or when we walk into a room Prays Sits pretty/begs Take a bow Hold things on her nose until I tell her to take it Tuck yourself in (rolls/wraps herself into a blanket and lays down) Rub my back To change pages on the iPad and click the piano app lol (<-this ones my current favorite) she then "plays" piano Play cowboy (jumps on my back while I crawl) The next thing were teaching her is bowling. Where we throw a plastic ball at the pins and then she knocks down whatever's left standing :p |
I grew up with dogs playing dead, us kids playing dead when we played cowboys and Indians or Army games, etc., so its second nature for us grown up kids. Never even thought of it as being really dead! |
MaxYorkieBear--your dog can use an iDevice, that's impressive! :) I still want to know how you teach a dog to put away its toys if anyone is willing to give those details. |

Thank you for the videos. The dog in the first one is so funny! "This isn't working, maybe if I go in the basket I'll get a treat?" |
Thanks for these tricks. I'm going to start training Ziggy to put away his toys! |
