To neuter or not to neuter is the question! Hello, I am new to this forum, but I am not new at being a proud owner of Yorkies. Currently, I have a 2 year old male Yorkie that has been very hard to potty train. This was partly due to the fact that we had an older Yorkie who couldn't hold his piddles anymore and dipped all over. Needless, to say it was a competition for the longest time between the two Yorkies. Marking there territory in the house and what have you... The older Yorkie has pasted now, but the younger Yorkie has developed some bad habbits and they NEED to stop. After doing some research, I have found out that I have set my Yorkie up for failure. Giving him WAY to much freedom while inside the house, he has learned to go inside the house when we are not looking. I am in the process of putting together the following schedule for everyone in the house to abide by: This is a work in progress: Marley Training Schedule Time Activity 8:00am Potty/Playtime Outside (Supervised Part-Time) 9:00am Food/Water/Cage (Remove Uneaten Food) 12:00pm Potty/Playtime Outside (Supervised Part-Time) 1:00pm Treat/Cage 5:00pm Potty/Playtime Outside (Supervised Part-Time) 6:00pm Food/Water/Cage (Remove Uneaten Food) 9:00pm Potty/Playtime Outside (Supervised Part-Time) 10:00pm Treat/Bedtime Notes: *Marley ONLY goes outside for 1 hour at 8AM, 12Noon, 5PM, and 9PM for a total of 4 hours a day. *Marley is fed twice a day at 9AM and 6PM and goes outside afterwards for 1 hour. *Marley can be free inside the house during cage-time; however, he MUST be watched while inside. *Praise him OUTSIDE for going potty while supervising. *Punish him INSIDE for going potty then bring him outside immediately and after he finishes, praise him. My question is, Does getting the dog Neutered help with the urges to go inside the house? |
It looks like you have a great plan!! I have read that neutering may help with marking in some instances but I think it will be more dependent on your training techniques. I have heard, from a vet tech, that it is helpful to neuter before they hit puberty (not sure what else to call it?). I am sure it must help in some way even Marley is a bit older. I think your plan looks perfect and whether you decide to neuter or not, Marley will be potty trained in no time. Good luck! :) |
i personally am in favor of neutering |

To this day, he has not marked in the house. He doesn't lift his leg to pee, either...he still squats! You might want to try belly bands on your's and see if that helps. |
