New Older Family Member I rescued Needs Help
 
Hello everyone. I just rescued a 2 year old Yorkie from a Puppy Mill rescue from an animal Shelter. She is obviously very scared, shy, and not very lively. I am giving her lots of love and being very patient and I will continue to do so for the long haul. I did however have a few questions. How can I get her to play? Seems like an easy answer but she just lays down and finds no amusement in anything we do. :( Secondly how can I get her to learn to walk on a leash? I place a harness on her but she never moves at all on the leash and she locks in. As soon as I drop the leash and let her pull it along she is game for it. Lastly, she really needs nurturing but I feel it scares her more when I hold her than when I leave her be. Is this normal and should I leave her alone for now? Thanks for all the prompt replies and I am anxious to see your opinions.

some dogs may not play for months...that part i would just let her come into her own on. when she becomes comfortable and more trusting you should see some playing. i would continue to let her walk around with harness and leash to become more comfortable. give her some good girls and treats along the way and then treats while walking with her with positive reenforment. good luck. i have had lola since may and she still isnt comfortable with a harness and leash but we continue to work on it.

Welcome to YT. I had a foster straight from a puppy mill that was a real wild child, so time will tell if she adjust 100%. I would just let her get use to the house, people and all since she has so much to learn. All she's ever known are cages and no petting. She's never learned how to play, that is something taught by their mother and littermates and doesn't come naturally. She just needs to get adjusted at her own pace. Give her pats with kind words and a treat, let her decide when she ready to craw on your lap. Don't be in a rush to get her to play or walk with a leash. When she's adjusted and happy, you will know it. ;)
Thank you for giving this baby a loving home. She's really young and has many years of happiness ahead of her now.
