Mouthing? Joel is 7months now and sometimes he mouths on my hands, he wont bite and he's gentle when he does it so should I let him or should he not even be mouthing. |
I think that each person has an opinion about this. Mina and I play with her mouthing my hand. She never bites down. We also play with my hand under a blanket and her chasing it. There are trainers that will tell you not to do this, but it has not ever presented a problem for me or any dog that I have owned. Im sure that someone else will come by with more information. |
Ahi also does mouthing. I don't see nothing wrong with it because she only does it when we are playing. I like when she puts her mouth over my hand/foot and pretends to bite down.(if that makes sense) Her mouth will kind of vibrate. Like how I bite down on babies(skin lol) cheeks. I also have her chase my hand or feet under blankets. She hops all over like a bunny rabbit and it's cute! :D |
Thanks guys, that sounds like what Joel does, so as long as he's playing. But sometimes he does it when he's trying to be "sassy" to me, lol and thats when I tell him not to.:rolleyes:Heck, Rosco who is 8 and 170 pounds still occasionaly play bites, lol but he knows not to hurt, hehe |
If I recall... in a dominant dog it can be a sign that the dog is trying to dominate you.... I let mine do it because I like that they have 'bite inhibition' or knowing not to bite hard, rather than not biting at all. I had to teach our Tinkerbell as an adult, and I had my doubts she would ever learn. I suspect this is what landed her at the Humane Society twice! She's a good girl now and I pretty much trust her not to bite hard. She's not real reliable with the 'under the covers' game, but we're working on that. She just gets overexcited sometimes. Here's a good article about it: Puppy Socialization and Bite Inhibition | Modern Dog magazine - the best dog magazine ever |
Maggie May does this to a point. She just gets so excited whenever I get home and she will do this on my nose except sometimes she gets so excited she will nibble the tip of my nose. Ouch! |
Thanks for the article, Joel is pretty good with bite inhibition especialy for me getting him at 7wks, and if he ever rarely bites hard he at least catches himself and acts like its a really bad thing, lol |

Lol, Joel does this with ears, he cannot help it, I still tell him no but thats his weakness. When my SIL was visiting he jumped on her lap and I heard her say "ow!" bc he got her ear. But were still working on that one:embarasse |

This all takes place on the back of the sofa as the back of the sofa faces the walkway into the family room. It's like a comedy show if you didn't know any better. lol |
