Sit/Lay Down Training....Help! I have gone back to basics with training Ginger. She knows and has always known the sit command. I thought I would teach her to lay down. I put her in a sit and then have her lay down with a hand motion and voice command of "lay down". Then she gets a treat. It was working beautifully until today. Ughhhh. Now, when I tell her to sit, she goes straight to a lay down. How do I undo that and get her to know the difference? I want her to sit sometimes too. Geezzzz. I haven't been treating that. Should I? She is one stubborn little girl! :rolleyes: She is taking the fast route to get a treat. Silly girl! I have also tried a lay down without treats and she looks at me like I'm nuts. She will sit without a treat but no way is she laying down without one. I guess it's not been long enough. What do I do? Advice anyone? :p |
Are you using a hand motion for sit? If not, you should have one for sit and a completely different looking one for lay down. Don't treat unless she does what you ask. So that you are right in doing. She is going to short cut to get the treat, she is a smart girl. The tough thing about training yorkies is you have to outsmart them and they often outsmart us! LOL |
I see! No, I don't have a hand motion for sit. I just say sit, and she does. Is it too late to start with one now? :eek: |
I don't think its too late to add a hand motion-just add it as you say the words and she'll eventually put two and two together. The key to get her to realize the difference is to make sure they are very different. Vary when you tell her to do each-dont immediately tell her sit, then lay down right after another. |
^^^Agree! Not too late! and yes space out the commands too. If you do the same commands in the same order all the time, they will remember it to be in that order only, like a choreographed dance. LOL I would do a hand signal for sit with all fingers touching the the thumb. Then down using the pointer finger and pointing the the ground. It's different looking enough so she won't confuse the two. I've also seen people use the pointer finger and point up for "sit" and then point down for "down" but then I would think that could look confusing. |

I used kibble to lead the nose to sit or go down, so my hand signals are a little different. I put my palm up while raising my hand for sit, and palm down moving my hand down for down. |

capt noonie is right. Both cues should have one word and one hand signal. We use Sit with one or two extended fingers (Like a child playing bang bang) and point to the floor. The cue Down (not lay down , get down etc. just Down) is the whole hand palm down the arm makes a swing down motion. To stand in place we cue Stand the visual cue is hand palm up fingers curled onto the palm (a loose fist) Three basic commands with easy to hear and see differences. Hope this helps, Teresa |
