Please Help Me!!! I found this site and I have found myself in a very different situation. I recently came into looking after a 4 year old teacup yorkie that my girlfriends family member could no longer look after. There is myriad of issues with this dog has and I hoping to find some kind of help. I have been around dogs my whole life and I even raised sheep herding border collies and I have trained several bird hunting labradors, but this thing is driving me far more nuts than any of my other dogs. to start this dog has a major potty training issue. I have proven that he is fully capable of holding it and does not have a problem with incontinence. if he is not held or i set him on an elevated surface where he cant move he will manage to roam the house and piddle where ever he pleases. again i have put him in a kennel several night and he has had no accidents, but he seems to have issues when he is just sitting around the house. I am used to disciplining my dogs with a swat or other means, but this dog only weighs 2 pounds and im sure i would end up doing more damage than correcting if i did this. i am 6'5" and I weigh 275 pounds im pretty sure if i flicked this dog with my finger i would end up breaking his leg so im worried. my second problem with this dog is his eating habits. he only eats if there is someone around to watch him eat and there has to be boilded chicken mixed in with his food. I died a little the first time i saw this and it was kind of the straw that broke the camels back and I decided to look at some training. the last issue is his problem with listening and paying attention, he just doesnt do it. I believe these problems stemmed from the previous owner and how they raised him so far. They would constantly carry him, pamper him, spoil him and they chose to not housetrain per say and use diapers. I was raised with the mentality if the dog was sick or had a broken leg, you should take it out back and, well you know the rest. I have never had to go that far with any of my animals and its not an option since this is very important to my girlfriend. I am hoping to find some answer and learn how to recondition this dog. I will not let this dog run our lives and I also know i cant treat it like one of my collies or bird dogs. |
The only advice I can think of that comes to my mind after reading your post is that your girlfriend should give this tiny baby over to a Yorkie rescue so that they can find a wonderful, loving home for him. You clearly don't have what it takes to train this tiny baby. |
Ok I posted in your other post before reading this. I have already addressed the issues except for one that really bothers me. You said "if the dog was sick or had a broken leg, you should take it out back and ...". Yorkies are a very delicate breed. I have had large dogs as well as small. Larger dogs tend to be more hearty than Yorkies. I have way more vet visits and bills with my yorkies. I really thought you might try with this pup from the other post. However, I now wonder if this is the pup for you. I know there were two offers to get him to a rescue group in your other post. This might be something to consider. Btw, is he 2 lb or 3 lb? You say 2 lb here and 3 lb in the other post. |
I am not so sure what you want from the members of this site. If you really want help you need to think of who you are talking to.. lovers of small dogs, yorkies. To say you would "shoot" a dog for a broken leg is so wrong on so many levels it would take to long to even start. Now.. if you want help the first thing is to forget all you ever learned about dogs. This is a new experence.. and if you take the time to adjust and learn you will receive more love from the little guy and your heart will melt. If you don't want to start over and learn I hope your girl friend will choose the little yorkie over you.. that would be my choice. |
Wow. I too had responded on your other thread. I agree with the posters above -- what kind of response are you looking for after hinting that a healthy dog with minor behavioral issues doesn't deserve to live? What do you expect a bunch of Yorkie lovers to say? |
My professional advise to you is short and sweet....rehome this dog immediately and go back to what you are emotionally and mentally equipped to deal with. Yorkies are NOT a good breed for you to be associated with. These are terriers and you can not "emotionally beat or manhandle" them into submission...you can never even imagine the behavior issues you will encounter. This dog has you irritated and irrational, and you really need to turn the dog over to a Yorkie rescue group. If it upsets your girlfriend, be as "understanding" with her as you are being with the little dog....tell her to get the hell over it! |
ALL DOGS need to be treated with love and kindness, never a reason for anything else. |
