Pee Pad vs. Belly Bands Jaeger is nearly 7 months old and mostly potty trained. He gets occasional "wild hair" moments where he will just randomly pee in the house, but most of the time his issues are one of two times: When we're sleeping, he'll go on the floor instead of waking us up to let him out, but if we leave the door cracked he'll choose the linoleum in the bathroom or the pergo in the living room over the carpet in the bedroom. When it's raining, he won't go outside for anything, choosing to hold it for hours and stealth pee/poop when he gets the chance. I've tried standing in the rain with him for a half hour. No dice. Against my preference, I'm thinking we either need to put pads down when its raining or at night, or get him a belly band. I'm concerned he either won't go on the pad, or will want to use the pads instead of going outside, so will starting going in the house more if we don't have pads down 24/7. I'm concerned he will fight the bellyband and try and take it off, and won't know to just pee if we have it on him. I eventually want him 100% trained to go outside the house. What do you all think? |
IMO- I you can't watch him confine :). Mine are all housebroken to potty outside. They hate the rain and cold so they just go quickly otherwise we stay out til they potty or they would be confined. IMO- Wee pads = It is okay to potty in the house and a belly band or diaper is just a bandaid on a problem. I will use a diaper if and only if they are sick. Do what works for you. |

My Riley is trained both ways. Outside and pee pad. So night if he has to go he uses the pads during the day he goes outside. I used the bellyband when I was having troubles with him going everywhere in the house and I could not watch him. But he has been here long enough and with much watching we do not need those anymore. I do put them on when we go to visit anyone just in case. My cairn is also trained both ways. Lily prefers to go outside and will hold it till she gets let out. So I say do what works best for you. But they will do both if trained that way. Good luck. |
I put paper towels down, he wasn't too interested in using them. I'm blind in one eye, so it's easy to be "just" out of my eyesight and a split second later he pees-I'm not going to crate him because my vision sucks. That's not an attack on you at all, Mika, and I do genuinely appreciate the advise. You did affirm what I thought about pee pads=ok to pee in the house. I just want a little help until he seems to get 100% hang of potty training. I eventually want him to go to the bathroom outside all the time. |
I think it's great to have them duel trained. The pee pad is for your convenience, you don't have to get out of bed and let them out! A belly band is not the answer, that's for a marking dog, you don't want to use it as a diaper. Why should your dog be punished because he can't hold it long enough? Also, if you get him use to a pee pad now, when he's sick or old, it will come in really handy. Dogs who have never used one find them very difficult to get use to as an adult. |
I actually buy the dog pads. And when first training I would lock him in your room with you at nights. And put them where you want him to go. I to prefer them going outside but the pads do make it nice at times when they can not wait. Better then going all over the house I have heard people having them on a leash inside so they know what there up to all the time. Of course just while your training. That way they are never out of site. It just takes time if your consistent on whatever method you chose. You will get him trained :) |
We usually keep the bedroom door closed and the bathroom door open-i'd rather he go on the linoleum then the carpet. I usually keep a leash on him most of the time. I used to keep the bedroom door closed while I was in it with him but he tried digging at the door, which messed with the carpet. I'm not trying to punish him, I just figured that peeing on a pad-peeing on the floor in the house, and I didn't think it was a good idea to train him to pee in the house. His issue isn't that he can't hold it. He holds it when we're gone and he is crated, he'll hold it when we're outside and sitting there a half hour trying to get him to pee, then come in the house and pee. |
Crystal just went both ways.....no training.:) Man those cold January mornings were just wonderful to stay in bed and she knew the pad was ok with me:thumbup: for her to use. In the beginning always use a scented pad or take a plain one with outside and rub it into the pee she/he just had. I'd do that for a week and a yorkie should have the idea by then and the scent is not necessary. When they do use it rave about and tell them 'good dog' once in awhile give them a treat (very small) but only if you see them pee. I must admit the first time I saw Crystal pee on it, I gave her a tiny piece of cheese.......she was so food motivated that I could have asked her to dance a jig.:D |

I ask him every 2 hours or so if he has to go potty-sometimes i'll get an affirmative answer-a bark, an excited dance, or he'll go to the door. If I think he needs to go and isn't telling me (its been awhile etc) I'll take him outside anyway. He does sometimes bark to tell us if he has to go without us asking, and he has a set of potty bells. |

Bought the pads yesterday-he's peed next to it once, but not on it, and I've caught him snuggled up on it like it was a blanket a few times *headdesk* I've tried to explain that he needs to potty on it....Here's hoping he picks it up. |

I rarely comment on potty training, because we have a huge storehouse of threads about it. As a trainer I encourage people to train for both. Yorkies are generally smart enough to quickly understand outside and a washable pee pad are both ok. Most will prefer to go outside. |
Thanks, Theresa. An update-We moved the only tv in the house into the living room (it was in the bedroom) so now we spend most our time in the room with the outside door and the potty bells. He is now constantly going to the bells to be let outside (even when he doesn't have to potty!) but if he lays down outside, I stay outside, and he quickly comes back in when he realizes I'm not coming as well. As for the pads-yesterday he pooped and one of the small pieces landed on the pad, so i took him over to it and praised him, and moved the other pieces onto the pad in hopes he'd get the hint. He's had one other poop accident, not on the pads....I just clean the spot with nature's miracle and put a pad over it in hopes he'll get the drift. |
He used one of the pads last night while we were sleeping...Woohoo, happy dance! :) Of course, it wasn't the one closest too the bed, or the back door...but I'll take what I can get right now. |
