We got Jaeger at 10 weeks, and didn't start leaving him at home until he was 14-16 weeks (can't remember exact dates) and only for a half hour or so for the first week or so. He's a daschund/yorkie cross and was a sturdy 5.5 lbs at 12 weeks.

Lots of different answers.... If it were me and The puppy was doing fine overnight and had shown no signs of hypoglocemia then I would feel comfortable leaving for 2-3 hours BUT I would feed her before I left to make sure she would be ok.

You are right; so much of this depends on the weight. Once a dog is over 4 pounds the risk of hypoglycemia is much less. That’s why there are different rules for toy breeds. Most of the breeders I know say they won’t let a dog go home until it’s at least 2 pounds, so if the OP’s dog is already over 2 pounds it’s not as dangerous.

There is a lot of different opinions on what you should do. You are with her everyday, so you know how she eats and if she ever shows signs of low blood sugar such as shaking. I got my liitle guy at 6 weeks old. I now know that was too young to get him, but I had no idea at the time. I had a specialist appointment I had to go to when he was about 9 weeks old and had to leave him for a couple of hours at least. The vet told me to give him about a fingerful of karo syrup when I had to leave him and also to make sure he ate before I left, they said that should sustain him until I got back, so that is what I did. I would always keep food and water down for him so if he got hungry he could eat and he would always have water to drink. He always did fine. I also never had a crate for him. From day one I put him in my bathroom with a gate up and he has always done fine he has his bed some toys and food and water in there. I never let him sleep with me because he was so tiny I was afraid if he fell or jumped off my bed he would get hurt, so he has always slept in the bathroom. He is now 25 weeks old and 3 lbs 6oz and still doing wonderful. By the way he was 1 lb 1 oz when I first brought him home and at 9 weeks he was 1lb 8 oz, If you are worried still though, you can always start leaving her in little intervals and seeing how she does. Start out at a half and hour and go up from there depending on how she does. By the way how much does she weigh. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Would it hurt to give her a little Nutrical before he leaves just to make sure?

I left my two 8-week olds alohenge short periods of time when I had things to do. They are now 12 years old. Congrats on your new baby!

I guess I just love her too much; I opted to stay in for this weekend and next. By July 8 she should be over 12 weeks and I will have started leaving her alone for 30 minutes first, and then 45 mins and then an hour, and build her up to it. I guess I just love her too much and my heart would be broken if anything happened to her...

I actually personally think you've been extremely wise...and the gradual build-up is by far the best way to go...:)

Probably, even if you had gone, you wouldn't have been able to relax and enjoy - every dreadful scenario would have been playing through your mind. We can't help it, they are tiny and so baby-like - a good decision! :) Hope you're enjoying every wonderful moment! Sally + Harry x

I know how worried sick our fur babies can get us & i'm a new Mama to Jaxson who is almost 12 weeks old. Me personally I have left Jaxson in his crate while my husband & I went grocery shopping but that was only after a week of him getting use to us & his crate & play pen! When we first got him one of us always stayed with him...it was mainly me though cause my husband is in the Army & works long hours so we just had to figure what worked for us! Jax is 3lbs right now & just got checked yesterday at the vet & he is very healthy! He eats great & is fully house trained! When we leave & come back he is sleeping in his crate & it doesn't seem to bother him one bit! We cover his crate with a dark blanket to make it feel like a wolfs den give it the dark feel & he has all his toys & things in there with him. We've left him no longer then 2 hours though & was on base the whole time. Good luck & you will find different opinions but everyone means well & know that everyone here was a new Mom at one point in time! Your new little one is Precious! I ended up bringing Hope home at 9 weeks cause the breeder was heading out of town for a family wedding. I also didn't know they shouldn't leave Mom that early, but we got her to the vet the next day and he said she was a healthy little girl. I tried not to leave her but we had an unexpected funeral come up and did have to leave her alone. Ended up being 5 hrs. and I was sooooo nervous. She has the Iris xpen with a mesh roof, her bed, food, water and pee pads plus lots of toys. I don't use collars since I've heard they are too dangerous. Anyway, she ended up doing really well. Personally if she hasn't shown signs of hypoglycemia yet and she's been eating well I think a few hours for church would be ok, but I'm far from an expert cause this is my first puppy too. I understand the pros and cons from both sides so I think only you can make this decision. Good luck with you new little one and welcome to YT. You will usually get different opinions here because some are professional breeders or very experienced Yorkie owners and there are also pet owners that are not aware of some the issues a Yorkie puppy can have.

Breeders that sell the very small Yorkies at a young age, like 8 to 12 weeks, are setting the puppy and the owner up for trouble. It sounds like you are a very attentive puppy owner. Do you know how much your puppy weighs? Do you know the symptoms of hypoglycemia? People who have Yorkies that grow to be 7lbs or larger tend not to have as many puppy issues although it is never wrong to take precautions as no one really knows for sure what size the puppy will mature to at such a young age. A little puppy that is happy and active can quickly wear down and have a fast drop in the glucose level. You need to be aware of the possibilities and decide when your puppy is large enough and it is safe enough to leave it alone.

I think you came to the right place for information. Maybe you should try to put her in another room for an hour in her crate while you are home to see how she acts. If she lays down and goes to sleep after a little while you will know she isnt pacing in her cage the whole time you are gone. That way you are there to see first hand how she acts Just turn on a radio be as quit as you can and sneak peeks. I think that way you would feel better about the whole thing. good luck and keep us updated

Just recieved a 6 1/2 week old 1lb tiny Yorkie
 

Please assist with your experiences. An acquaintances 5lb Yorkie mated with a 3.5 Yorkie and the poor baby had 5 puppies. It was too much for the sweet Mama but she was able to feed them for four weeks then they were weened at 4.5/5 weeks I was told. I have fostered many animals, some just days old, with success. I am frightened after reading the posts about all of the problems these little darlings have. I am feeding her Science Diet soaked in water with a little Karo Syrup a few morals, a few times a day. She doesn't have much of an appetite. I also give her Nutrical twice a day. The puppy is very active, receptive and loving. I have a four year old 8lb neutered Yorkie that thinks she is his baby. He is very protective and wouldn't let my neighbor near her crib. He lays on our bed and just stares at her. Pretty sweet actually.

I will take her to the Vet next week to check her out and discuss shots. I think she will be too small to have shots. My opinion. I am giving her Albon.

I had a doctor appt. this morning for 2 hours and read I should not leave them when they are that young.

If any of you could pass any of your expertise and tiny baby feeding secret i would be so grateful!!! I love this sweetie pie and could not handle anything happen to her.
