Puppy Crying Every Hour at Night Hi, I'm new to the forum. We recently adopted Jackson who is now 11 weeks old (we got him at 9 weeks). At night, we put him in his crate located next to our bed. At first, knowing that he has such a small bladder, we would set our alarms for every couple of hours and wake up to let him out. He would go potty about 50% of the time and only had an accident in his crate once or twice. The last few days we decided that we would let him let us know when he needed to go and stopped the preemptive potty breaks. He hasn't had any accidents in his crate, but he is waking up every hour or so crying and banging on his cage until we let him out. He is going potty about 75% of the time when we bring him out now (every hour). Is having to to to the bathroom this frequently normal for a pup his age? He is not a huge fan of his crate (he cries for a few minutes when first put him in the crate at night and lock the door) so we can't really tell if he has to go potty or just wants to be played with. Any advise would help. Thanks, James |
Yes it is perfectly normal :) Your puppy is still very infintile. Usually they don't leave their mommas until 12 or more weeks old. He is missing his littermates and will take him a while to settle into this whole new world of his. Imagine a baby being taken from everything they know (puppy leaves the comfort of momma and littermates) and thrown into a big scary new world with strangers. It takes some time. That being said, if you have him in a crate next to your bed, the best way to make him feel at ease is to have him UP at your level (on a nightstand, dresser, etc) so he can see you at night. Sometimes just reaching in to stroke him with your hand is all it takes to settle him down. You will still be getting up for potty breaks for some time though. The rough estimate sometimes used is a puppy should be able to hold their bladder as many hours as months old they are. IE, if he is 3 months old, approx 3 hours between potty breaks. This is just a general rule of thumb, food, exercise, water intake are all variables in this formula Hope this helps some, and congratulations on your new puppy! :) |
