Prude puppy? Jaeger is 6 months old and not 100% potty trained. Today, I noticed him sniffing around, so I asked if he had to go potty. He looked at me then walked away, aloof. He kept sniffing, so I kept asking to no avail. He kept trying to go off on his own, so i'd call him over and tell him to "stay with mommy." When I was done in the kitchen, I brought him with me into the bedroom, grabbed his potty bells from the backdoor and put them on the inside of the bedroom door. He starts sniffing in the bedroom, so I direct him to use the bells if he had to potty. He rang them, so I opened the door and he took off. After retrieving him, I picked him up, put him in the grass, and told him to go potty. He went to the door and barked to go inside. I decided I'd wait outside til he potted, but 20 minutes later I was dying from the heat, so I picked him up, put him in the bedroom, and he immediately went for the bells. I scooped him up, put him in the grass. He went straight to the door and barked. We did this, seriously, like 6-8 times. I was exhausted. He finally peed and went to the back door. I lavished him with praise when he went to the door, got him a treat, and took him to the bedroom. He went into the living room and started sniffing again. I put him in the bed room with me, shut the door, and he went straight for the potty bells. Repeat above scenario about 4-6 MORE times. He finally pooped, I lavished with praise and gave him a treat. He won't go if I'm looking at him, if the grass is wet, will STOP going if I praise him while he is going....And we seriously did this test of wills thing in the georgia heat for 4 hours. Someone please tell me he'll get the hang of things soon. |
Dexter was like this. He was trained to use pee pads, so when it was time to teach him to do it outside he looked guilty and wouldn't go if anyone was watching. If you think about it, it's all he's ever known to pee inside, and if he has done it anywhere else other than the pee pad then he gets scolded. I waited for him to start going and then looked at him, so he had no chice but to finish then whilst I was looking, he's totally fine now! He also didn't like wet grass, rain, wind, puddles etc. I think some of these tiny dogs are just fussy  Also, I was told by someone not to praise him whilst he was doing his business so as not to distract him, because I was doing the exact same thing you are. Let him get on with it, then praise him. I hope that helps. I thought I could actually pull out the hair from my head when toilet training Dexter! But it gets better, he's great now and so will Jaeger be :) |
Thanks! He has been doing this for SIX HOURS STRAIGHT. I am overheated, upset, and ready to scream and cry and even now he wants out...augh |
