Can't Get a harness on!! I finally got my little Emy last Thursday...and I have been carrying her in and out to the exercise pen. I tried to get the little harness that I bought for her on, and I got it on yesterday,(not easily) and put a leash on and we walked a little distance, then we came back inside. Today I can't get it on her. She fights and fights and fights with me. I couldn't do it....Any suggestions to get her harness on or is she too young yet for it. She's 12 weeks old. |

More importantly...Is she fully vaccinated? |
You should definitely begin now -- she's not too young. She should grow out of it... everything is new to her. But at that age, training and socializing etc is very important. Learning how to wear a harness is going to most likely be a part of her every day life so it's good you are starting now! Just keep at it. :) Here's a good video: |
What kind of harness are you trying to put on? Is it a stappy type that you have to put her legs thru? or something that goes over her head? When we first got Hot Rod, he disliked the strappy type of harnesses. He would constantly chew on them and one time he got his lower teeth stuck on it! I found a vest harness and he has never bother them one bit! Then I found one that you had to put over his head--he didn't dislike it once it was on, but he didn't like have something going over his head. Maggie May has never had any problems with any type of harness, thankfully. He's almost 5 now and I can use strappy harness now. |
I have two, one is like a buddy belt, but its called scrappy pet harness, the other is one manufactured by Cesar Milan, both of them I have to put her legs through and fasten on top, I don't want to fight with her, cause then she'll never let me do it. And yes, she goes in for her (3) round of shots in two weeks, and I'm just walking her a little way around our paved driveway. She saw vet yesterday for her puppy wellness exam, and is perfect, except I have to put drops in her ears for a little yeast debris, is what the vet told me. That is another fight, I can't get her to hold still for me to put 4 drops in each ear!!!...The vet also gave me the complimentary Heartgard heartworm medicine, which I haven't given her yet, its a huge chewable, its for o - 25 lbs, she is only 3.4 lbs, got weighed yesterday. If she doesn't consume that whole chewable at once, I am worried that she isn't getting the whole, also does this upset their stomachs, the Heartgard? She's a little pistol, everything goes in her mouth if she's awake, I have to watch her like a hawk. |
I was worried about the big heart worm pill as well. I didn't think either of mine would eat the whole thing. My pups are 12 weeks and 8 weeks. I just took one at a time and broke it up in my hand. They loved it. They both ate the whole thing. :-) |
Jaeger didn't tolerate his harness OR me taking his collar off/on very well at first. He was also a leash chewer. Be patient, and offer treats. He doesn't fight me at all now, especially when he realized that leash meant walk, and harness meant car ride :) |
Hayes2001, Thank you, I will break it up and give it to her that way. She gobbles every little treat, so that may work better. I may have to find one of those over the head harnesses also - if I ever get out of the house again!..I don't want to leave her crated up and leave yet, don't want her to get all worked up and stressed out. When should I leave the house with her crated (for a short time only, for grocery store trips)? :animal-pa |
the magic word ~ treats. i said "good girl" and gave mine a treat every time i put it on. worked like a charm. she's pretty good about it now. i still give her a treat once in a while for it. she's about 6 months. |

Geno wasn't a huge fan of the harness either but after a while he got used to it especially cause he knows now that the harness means he is going outside. Did the vet tell you to start on heartworm medicine right away? I don't think it really matters though but our vet was gonna have Geno start it when he went for his annual appointment in October. I decided to start him earlier so I called the vet to get him tested for heartworms and when he tested clean, we started him on it. We also break up the pill cause it is way too big for Geno to swallow whole. |

Courtney1121: They sent me home with the puppy starter kit yesterday and said to give it to her (and I didn't yet, cause I wanted to ask on here first), when I went in yesterday I also took a fecal sample and they called me today and said she had coccylia or something like that, which the vet said is very common in puppies, but I had to go get some worm medicine. I came home and gave her her first dose and she loves it!! It tastes like banana. So now I'm wondering if I should wait till I go back on the 27th when they will check another fecal sample to start on that heartgard plus. I don't want to give her too much in one day. The heartgard plus is so large, and I break it up what if she doesn't finish it off or doesn't want the whole thing at once? |
