I have a 1-2 year old Yorkie who marks! Help? I ended up rescuing a small 6.3 pound male yorkshire terrier. I have a male daschund who is house trained. Now I don't know anything about the previous owners at all but this little yorkie likes to mark, outside and inside the house. We keep him outside until he has peed for a very long time then we bring him in and feed him and he still tries to mark. I don't know if he was never house trained or if he is just doing it because we have another male in the house. He also is not neutered so I was thinking neutering could help. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any will help! Also do you think he hasn't been house trained or because there is another male dog? Thanks, Heather |

hi and welcome. how cool of you to rescue this little guy. well the first thing you need to do is definetly get him nuetered. it may help , it may not. i am sorry i don't have any helpful advice as far as the marking goes but i am sure you will get some other useful advice. are you trying to outside train him only? if so you will need to take him out every hour and right after eating. tell him to go potty , when he does . lots of praise.. |

I have read a little about it and a lot of people say neutering does help stop the marking instinct because they no longer want to show dominance. I am just worried because he is a little dog! Poor guy probably won't be able to handle the pain too much. I also read about the belly band but I am not sure how that would work. Thank you again for helping as much as you could! |
Hi and welcome to Yorkie Talk. That is so wonderful that you rescued this little yorkie. From what I've heard lots of males will mark more if they aren't neutered. He may be marking his territory and because you have another male in your house this may be somewhat worse. Maybe you can use bellybands on him until you're able to get him neutered. I hope this gets better for you. Perhaps it's just a temporary problem related to his anxiety and adjusting to his new home too. I'm certainly no expert on males since I only have four females though. ;) I hope others will give you some great suggestions too. :) |
Yes the bellyband will help save furniture and carpet while you work with him. |
You are very welcome. I am sure the nuetering will help. Good luck with your little guy |
Get the bellybands!!! I have the same problem with Rocco. He was neutered at 7 months he is now 22 months. He does spend alot of time (they do not live together)with his sister Dottie and older "cousin" Mudpie who is definitley the alpha male. the bellybands have been a Godsend for me. i purchase them from T. Bumpkins here on YT. He is pee pad trained and never marks in the house when i am there. when i go out of the house for any period of time he will defintley mark. Its pretty hard to correct it since its just him and i. I am usually not there when he actually does mark. I could use any advice on this if anyone has any!!! |
My friend had her male yorkie neutered because he marked in her house, this did not stop him from doing it. The vet did explain to her, it depends on the dog, sometimes they stop, sometimes they dont..so she uses the Bellyband on him, Good luck :o) |
My Logan is 3, and he is also a rescue that was never neutered or housebroken. We used the "puppy umbilical cord" technique (we kept him on a 3-4 foot leash at all times when he was out of his crate) and that pretty much solved the problem. Also- any places that your baby has marked in your house need to be DEEP CLEANED to obliterate the odor. You might not smell it, but your dog CAN! And it will tell him that it's his job to go potty there. Over, and over, and over... You have to be patient and just let the process play out. He didn't pick up his bad habits overnight, so they won't be broken overnight, either. Good luck!!!! |
Marking Hi, I also have just two months ago adopted a 4year old male Yorkie, 'Homer'. I have two other dogs (a 5year old Labrador & a Setter) and its a challenge every day for Homer not to attack the Setter. Homer was also marking everywhere (laying out his territory!!) So we had him neutered two weeks ago and the marking has definately STOPPED :) The agression against my Setter hasnt but my vet assures me its early days & may take 3-6 weeks to see any change. So go ahead & have the little fellow neutered as it may help with his marking. If anyone has any advice on how to stop Yorkies being aggressive with other dogs in the same household it would be greatly appreciated. Poor Homer comes off worse in the fights but he doesnt seem to learn. I'm afraid the next attack may be his last :( |
