Need Yorkie-proof gate!
 

We just adopted a 7-month-old male Yorkie a couple of weeks ago. Our problem is finding a gate that he can't either climb or go through. We purchased a regular baby gate and he was able to get his little paws in the holes & climb to the top to get over. We then got another baby/pet gate with vertical bars that was 36" tall. He couldn't get over it, he just went through the bars. I've been thinking about the retractable mesh gates. Anyone have any ideas? We work 8 hours a day and would like to contain him to our utility room instead of a crate.

We used a white plastic piece of lattice. At first we had a wooden lattice but the holes were too big - about 2 inches. The white plastic holes are about 1 inch. It's about 4 feet by 8 feet. Sammy was a jumper!!
We got it at Home Depot and you can cut it with a saw to fit the size you need. Good Luck!!

We have a baby gate that is made of plexi glass - no toe holds!

Alvindy, where did you get one made from plexi-glass? Sammy Mommy, I looked at thelattice but was afraid he'd be able to climb that.

You can buy a sheet of plexiglass at Home Depot- Drill a few holes and tie it to your existing gates. My friend did this with per pup and it worked like a charm. :)

I actually purchased two of these playpens as I have extra wide doors. Romeo is a little teapot at 15-16 lbs and has NEVER been able to knock these over.

I have one of these too! I did a review on it on amazon actually right after we got it, we use it as his regular pen when we go to work and whatnot. He loves it =]

I recommended this to a friend who just got a new pup and she loves it as well. I purchased two so I can extend Romeo's play area as well as create different setups so he won't get bored.

Home Depot has a plastic mesh that I think is for fencing (it is black and is a tiny mesh)...it comes in a roll. I put that on my gates with tie wraps.

I have gates with the vertical bars. I bought corrugated plastic sheets at lowes and cut them to cover the gate and attached with zip ties. It is a lot cheaper than the plexiglass and easier to cut and put holes in. I found it over by the Plexiglass and glass. My puppy has started to chew the corner of it but she can't get through it which was the purpose. Be really careful with gates or x pens with small openings. When one of my girls was in her first heat she jumped/climbed out of her x pen and caught her leg on the top and broke her ulna and radius. It cost us $3500 to fix. So be careful.

Yes, this! Imagine my surprise when I can home one day to find her running around the house, dragging my laundry everywhere. I couldn't believe she could just the gate. Got the second one that day!

This is just what I was going to suggest....I made mine....I went to Lowes, had them cut me a piece of plexi-glass the size of the baby gate, drilled 4 holes in it, one in each corner, big enough to run one of those plastic electric cord/ cable ties through the hold,........I put the plexiglass against the baby gate, fitting the door space from side to side, attached it to thew baby gate with the plastic ties at each corner, and VOILA! no can climbie or go thru the bars!.....and can still see out!...

Just saw this post and our 10 week puppy climbed of her Iris play pen in the middle of the night. I had been concerned about her drinking so I left her water out and her crate open last night thinking she'd be ok cause she was still confined to her pen. Around 4:30 am I hear her and think.....she sounds alot closer than her playpen so I get up to check and sure enough she's at the top of the stairs. Sooooo thankful she didn't hurt herself. I checked her pen and she did pee and poop on the pee pad in her playpen (WAHOO) but I didn't see the gate open or any way she could have climbed under it. I put her back...waited a few minutes as she really wanted back out and sure enough she begins to climb the pen. WOW! She's only a little over 2 lbs so never expected this. I checked online and Iris does carry a mesh cover but the reveiws said it was attached by velcro, not a tight fight and their puppies still escaped. Not sure what to do but need something ASAP cause we also may need to leave her for 5 hours soon for a funeral. Wondering if there is a better way to secure the mesh cover if I purchased it since it's probably the better fit. If it's lose, being mesh I would have to think there's a way to "tie" it down. Oh dear, I cannot believe your pup scaled that gate! Romeo does not like to be confined but he's never tried to "escape" that playpen. I've seen some great portable playpens at PetSmart but they are expensive, and in my opinion, not at all sturdy.
