Is it possible to change a 3yr old I have a 3 year old Yorkie and he is pad trained(he also uses the side of my couch, gross) I would like him to go outdoors. My question is, can you retrain a dog to go outside after 3 years of using potty pads? If you can I would like all the methods that you have. I am real frustrated and my house stinks. I dont know what else to do. Husband furious. |
It is always possible to change a dog's habit . All it takes is patience and treats. |

Is he a little guy ? Small enough that you could leave him in a ex pen when you are not at home. At least that would keep him off the couch. Is he nuetered ? Sometimes males will mark. I guess my best advice would be to watch him very closely in the house. Take him out every hour , tell him to go potty , if he does give him a treat. I wish i could be more help. Hopefully you will get some suggestions.. |
I have used a belly band to prevent urinating on the furniture and walls. After a day or two, he might learn not to go just anywhere, and will 'hold it' till he gets to go outside. Mine does not like the 'feel' of a wet belly band, and will wait to go outside after a few days. I'd start letting him out for potty every hour, high praise and a treat when he goes. Then gradually increase the time between potty breaks. Also limiting his access to one or two rooms (easily cleaned) will help get this under control. Do not punish accidents, ignore them and clean the area with an enzyme cleaner (may take a few applications depending on the stain). Learn to spot his signals that he needs to 'Go Potty'. |
Okay if your house stinks you truly need to get an enzyme cleaner, also a black light. the black light will show up any urine or other stains you haven't found yet. Actually there is no magic to training, just persistence and consistency. any method can work. But until you get the scent of his urine off your walls and furniture, you will need to consider belly bands with a pad in them. Frequently change the pads. Or an expen with pads down on the floor. I also have used a steam cleaner after the enzymatic dosing throughout my house; and at least it makes me feel better and the house smell a whole lot better. If you are at home all day, that makes life a lot simpler. Every hour take him out for a potty break, use the same command if he pees or marks, reward with a treat, and make a BIG deal of it. Then 2 or 3 times a day, off you go for either a walk or a play session in the yard. A tired pup is a good pup. The walks /play don't have to be long 10-15 minutes but make them fun and energetic for the pup. |
