help with potty training,frustrated
 

HELP i have a 12 week old yorkie,i have tried everything to potty train,taking her out,puppy pads,crate trained she just isnt getting it, is there any other things i could try i dont know what to do,iv tried so hard

i totally understand.
Potty training can be very frustrating.
My boy is 7 months old , it took forever.
He hated potty pads, preferred the carpet.
So i got a litterbox and a gate and sectioned off my
living room . After awhile he got it.
Now he uses his box 100%
do you have an x-pen?
If she does not care for the potty pads , you could try a
different surface .
I got the rascal dog litterbox that uses a grate.
My boy does great with it..

It can be frustrated, but dont give up or get mad at your baby. He will get it. You may need to limit his space till he is completed trained. He is still very young.

At 12 weeks, it's trying to train a 1 year old. I don't believe it is possible. You can start but you are at the beginning. My puppies don't even leave here until at least 12 weeks but no sooner.... start at the beginning, limit their area and don't give them run of the house unless they have just gone potty and you can watch them the whole time. In a smaller area, my puppies will usually use a pee pad but if they have the full run of the house, probably not....

Congrats on your new little furbaby!!! :) No worries!! She is still very young and it would be expected that she has frequent accidents at her age. My Max took a while but he is fully trained at 6 months. The key is consistency. There are many other posts on this site related to potty training which you should check out but here are a few key tips.

-Crate training
- Take her to the same spot every time (if it is a potty pad then keep it at the same place/ take to same place in the yard)

-If you take her out and she does not "go", put her back in a while (15 minutes) and try again

-When she is out of the crate take her to the potty spot every 30 minutes or so if she goes then reward her with more play time or a treat.

-If she has an accident, you must catch it immediatey!! Make her aware of it and give her a firm "No!". Then, take her to the potty spot immediately.


I had to give Max treats for going in the yard because he thinks grass is yucky and does not like walking in it. After he became more successful, I just praised him verbally. Don't give up!! You are at the right place for advice. :) Good luck!

potty training is very frustrating but i think a couple things help. 1. Patience 2. Consistency 3. Reward

A 12 week old wont get it right away, even if they catch on fast, their bladders are still little and so a lot of patience is needed. I think its bets to pick one method that works for your lifestyle and stick to it, either Crate Training or Potty Pad Training so the puppy wont get confused, and lastly be extra plaesed when potting in the right spot!

P.S you might try naming the potty action, so the puppy knows what you are talking about at all times. I alwyas say "good potty Ziggy" and treat him, and it has worked a treat

thanks everyone for the advice i have really been trying,she dont seem to like the puppy pads at all but shes went to the door a few times and i let her out and she went potty so hopefully she keeps it up!!!

Im going to be honest I was so fustrated with my pup...she would pee and poop on the floor and I would spank her and take her to the pad. Now she goes on her pad, even if she is upstairs where I dont keep pads she will hold it until I take her downstairs or outside...or if she can't no longer hold it she will run downstairs on her own and get on her pad. People say its wrong to spank your puppy...but Bella got spanked everytime she pee or pooped on my floor and she learned....

Don't spank your pup but I understand your frustration. I am so frustrated with Khloe today. I keep taking her out and no poop. I know she will be pooping in the house at any moment now. I crate her when I can't watch her but she is crated while I am at work so when I am at home I want her to be free a little. Some days she does well and then other days its like nothing clicks.:( My problem is she loves outdoors. Kirby hated outside. So as a puppy Kirby would hurry and do her business so we could go back inside.

I use to crate Bella but I would come home to a crate full of poop. So I brought a babygate and blocked off my laundry room and put a training pad, her food and water and toys in there and I would leave the light on. The first day I came home she had poop all over the laundry room, so the next day I put a pad in there with a little smear of her poop on it and when I got home she pooped and peed on her pad only the floor was clean....it was hard training her and she still makes mistakes but not as much. When I let her outside she poops and pee on her own I never trained her to do that I guess its just dog instincts I don't know

I'm starting to think I'm never going to get this. I had her either with me or in her crate all day & no potty. I finally sat down on the kitchen floor not taking my eye off her...she wanders over to the corner & squats but it was too late by the time I got up. I still can't tell when she's sitting or getting ready to pee. At least it wasn't the carpet this time. lol I can totally relate to being frustrated. At night she's in a playpen with a pee pad outside her crate. I leave the door open. Some nights we're lucky & it's the pad others it's right next to it.

I got my baby when she was 12 weeks old, before that times read everything I could get my hands on because I was going to do it perfect. I work from my home so I could be right there with her. I live in an 8th floor condo so I chose to put peed pads on my patio. I bought a small crate as all books stated and I was ready. I had a plan and I knew I would be successful. The first night home she stayed on my lap and I would take her out and put her on her pee pads every hour. Nothing.....I finally had to do a little work so I put her in her crate, well guess what, she peed in it. I cleaned it up and said nothing. I got up with her every hour all night long, nothing. The next morning I put her down on the floor with me and I caught her trying starting to pee. I said no in a stern voice, picked her up and took her out to her pee pad but she wouldn't go anymore. In fact it got to the point where all she would want to do is crawl back on my lap when I took her out to her pee pad. I was always nice to her, but I would peel her off of my lap and put her back on her pad. But grrr nothing. I finally got worried about her not peeing so I covered the bathroom floor with pee pads, shut her in and she peed. So the next day I went and bought an exec to put on the patio, the door opens right into the pen, covered the patio floor with pee pads and would take her out every hour and just let her run around. If she peed I praised her profusely and gave her a treat. But again if I had to do something in the house and couldn't watch her I would put her in her crate and she would pee in it. I never scolded her when she peed on the carpet, I just cleaned it up very well and I still always had my sights on her in case she did pee I could always clean it up. After she was pretty consistent with peeing on the pads I started reducing the amount I put down until now I am down to 1 pad in the corner and she always peed on it. She is now 5 months old so I have had her for 2 months, she just started this week whining at the patio door when she needs to go out. I still don't trust her and she still doesn't have free run of the house, but she hasn't peed in the house for at least 2 weeks now. All of this to say, it takes lots of patience and lots of perseverance, it's not going to happen in a week or two, or even a month. I have never, ever spanked her and neither will I she isn't doing it to be naughty, rather she has a little bladder and is just learning what is acceptable. I will be the first to admit it has been a lot more work than I ever imagined, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. She is my baby! Hang in there, realize she is her own individual and what worked for another might not work for her.

I knew this wouldn't be easy but I feel like a new mom all over again. lol With my kids grown, oldest married out of the house with 2 babies of her own & my youngest passing away a few years ago she has been a great comfort. If only I could stop worrying so much. Thankfully we had a good night & she peed & pooped on the pee pad this morning. ; ) No interest in going outside. Could that be confusing her sInce she is only 9 weeks old? I take the pad out but nothing. At this point I'm willing to settle for her knowing to use the pad.

HELP can you tell me what we can do to stop them from thinking that the carpet is their wide world potty?

We have tried potty pads and they refuse to go on them, and it's in our half bathroom we take them after they wake up and after eating and stay 15 minutes with them in what we can the potty room and nothing works.

My Norman is 12 week this coming Friday..He is doing fairly well with potty training. We know that first thing he does one so hes straight out in the garden, back in for brekkie back out for poop no.2. Earlier he was on his paper in the living room and was sniffing and circling so i whipped him outside and he went again. Hubby keeps loosing his temper about it. Not with Norman but in general. But Im like for goodness sake hes still a baby and I personally think hes a superstar. And doing very well. I think patience and a very close eye on yr babies mannerisms when he/she is due a toilet helps too. My Norman gets restless if hes on my lap. May only be little things but its their little way of telling you I NEED THE LOOOOOOOOO:D

This potty training is really hard with these Yorkies, we had a mini-pin and she learn right away and back in her day it was newspaper to potty on and a noise rubbing and a spanking if she went in the wrong place.

Now they tell you not to yell at them or spank them. So it's the new age of potty training.

Our friend said teach them the 3 P's, Pee, Poop, Pad and they will learn to go that's a laugh. They would rather tear the potty pad up than use it, sometime in the middle of the night they might, but rare, during the day forget it.

Sitting in the bathroom, putting them back on pad for 15 to 20 minutes and they will either sit down or lay down in it. Let them out and they will run right to the living/dinning room area and go and not the same place all the time, just wherever when the mood hits them, down and pee.

Poopping is something else we found out that they communicate to one another and we noticed it a couple days ago. Princess Prissy came running into the bedroom and walked up to Sir Bentley and said something to him, he took off on the run and I scopped him up right away and went looking sure enough she had poopped and come told him.

This has been going on with each of them, so in the morning since they won't use the potty pads, we carry one around until the other one goes and then he/she will walk away and not eat it, but if their both on the floor at the same time and you start for it, goodbye it's already gone. So nasty.

2 successes one failure today and now one stubborn little girl refusing again to potty! She was great this morning. Doesn't seem to want to pee first thing but after about 30-45 min she peed on the pad. Got lots of love and treat, playing on the floor when she ran to the pee pad and pooped. So happy....BUT after her nap again I take to the pee pad....nothing. One hour later at the other side of the kitchen (and mind you my kitchen isn't huge or anything) I look over and sure enough she squats and I yell NO firmly...too late...she stops & I put her on the pee pad but nothing. I'd like to try the umbilicord but can't find a harness that fits her properly.

Wow, reading all of these responses, I guess I got lucky. Teaka did very well with potty training. It took a bit longer than any other dog I've had, but she was trained by the time she was 6 months old I think. She still uses her potty pad when it rains or snows but other than that, she goes outside. :)

I recommend training them on potty pads first!! Then once they get the hang of that, slowly move the pad outside until they go on the grass. Also have some sort of command word. "Pee or Wee Wee". Now for Teaka its just "Outside"

We started out on the potty pads and the little girl Princess Prissy was doing ok, but her brother Sir Bentley I think is what messed her up, and during the night sometimes she will use it.

But during the day the both refuse to use them, carpet is there spot.

There 13 wks old maybe it will get better.

Well last night & this morning went better! She used the pee pad to pee then about 10 min later I saw her beginning to squat at the other end of the room & quickly hollered UH. She instantly stopped & ran to the pee pad, paced a few second & pooped. She seems to hold her pee a long time. Woke up at 6 & let her run around the play pen which has a pee pad nothing. 7:30 took her to the kitchen & finally about 8 am she went. Is this normal? I started leaving water in her crate to make sure she's drinking. I'm also trying to crate train. Thanks for the advice on just sticking to pee pads & worrying about going outside later.

It's funny we went into town this morning after they had breakfast and pooped. Was in town about 2 1/2 hrs. came home, Prissy couldn't hold it so on the way home Prissy went in her carrier the first time ever, but Bentley when we got him home took him to the potty pad and he went. So I think it's just when they want to. See how the rest of the day goes.

Went from 8 am to 3:45 before she would pee again. Didn't even whine. Beginning to worry she'll get UTI but went again at 7:45. Is there a secret to getting them to drink more?

We was worried that our 2 were not getting enough to drink either because their pee was so yellow so we went to an automatic water and it works great their pee not as yellow now.

When they was younger the Vet told us they needed 2 shot glasses full of water per day per puppy. So that's what we did measured it out.

Thanks SirBentleys mom. I'm going to go out & get her one today. Should I remove the regular water dish or just keep the auto one in her playpen or crate? Thanks so much!

Get her use to it first before you remove the regular water dish, now remember the more water she drinks the more she will pee.
We use bottle water for Bentley and Prissy until just last week and we started them on water from the refg. because it is filter.

SirBentley...THANK YOU!!!!! I did get out to get the automatic water bottle and she began to drink more. I've kept her water bowl in the kitchen with her food and she finally started drinking that a little, but I have seen her use the auto one more when she's in the play pen or crate. I would rather have to potty her more right now than worry about UTI's and dehydration. Went to a new store that was recommended by a friend called Positively Pets and the woman working there was soooo helpful. She also suggested a put a little water in with her dog food so I came home and did that....sure enough she started eating more. Last night she started peeing. The amounts aren't as large but about 2 hours apart so I think she may have been holding it way too long. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your suggestions!

This is good news. What do you feed Hope. We have feed our dry food with chicken broth on it from time to time to help soften their bm's. Warm water works too.
If she ever has trouble with bm's pumpkie pie mix, just a small amount works great.

Watch to see if the pee get's less yellow as she drinks more, they say the yellow is caused from salt in their system, both Bentley and Prissy is cleared and not as much odor to it now.

Did our Princess surprise us yesterday afternoon, we was coming from the master bedroom past the 1/2 bath where there potty pads are set up and she was using it on her own and no one took her there.

Slept from 10:00 to 5:00 a.m. and no nightly potty breaks but this morning took her to the potty room and she did all three of her P's. Good girl

Sir Bentley is a different story took him and waited to see if he would do anything and the minute he was let out off to the carpet he went. Are boy dog's hard to train.
