Collars, Leads and Harnesses What do you use on your yorkie and why? |
I would never use a collar to hook a leash to I use only a harness for the leash. But I use a collar to hold her rabies tag and name tag. I feel a collar with tags is very important. |
Thanks! |
Kiko has a collar for her ID tag. She wears a harness for walks. I have a retractable and regular leashes. For normal everyday walks I use the retractable leash. Which leash I use depends on where we are going and what we are doing. |
We use buddy belts. But... that being said, it took quite a few orders to find the right one. We first ordered the original black harness. It works great, but was really stiff, and bothered our little guys legs(in their armpits). Many here will tell you the size must have been off, but that was not the case at all. In the end, we ordered from their "natural" collection. It's perfect. Same size(2), but was for whatever reason, not double stitched, and much more soft and subtle. The leather was much more thin, and less rivets. They make pads to go under their armpits, but they just made it more bulky. We loved the design so just kept trying. The design is great for yorkies, and now that we have two "natural" buddy belts in the house, it makes our walks so much more enjoyable. Both of our boys would just lay down flat as soon as we put put our original BB on, and we could not figure out why. The thick leather was actually rubbing on their front elbows. Once we found the natural version, they are begging to walk. I guess both our boys, from different breeders, have weird body structures, but they hated the buddy belts until we got the naturals. Most people here love buddy belts, so im pretty sure you cannot go wrong, but if your yorkie seems to be a bit put off, put it on and feel behind his front legs. If its rubbing, your yorkie is not going to want to walk. Try the natural buddy belt. The buudy belt liners did not work for our boys, just made is rub more, albeit softer. Try buddy belts first, its a great product. May take some trial and error, but its worth it in the end. IMO |
We use Buddy Belt harnesses & leashes for walks. I like the fit & look of the harness alot, but I am noticing that it is breaking ZoE's hair off around her shoulders. As it's real leather its not good for walking in water, so I'm on the lookout for something that will do well at the beach. |
We use a coller with all his tags on it. We have a harness but we dont use it as of now because our puppy thinks when we walk it is a full blown marathon. We are using the coller to teach him to not run while on the leash. |

To walk him, we use a Choke Free harness (it's like a buddy belt, but the D ring goes through overlapping leather)...we can't get them over here, so I got one imported from the USA - www.freidaspetboutique.com - brilliant! :) I believe that Amazon UK are now stocking a certain amount of buddy belts... As for leads - the same as collars, we've got dozens ;) He won't wear clothes of any description, so I have to tart him up a little bit... We have the comfi-grip flexi lead for 'park' walks, for the times we can't let him off....happy hunting! :D Sally + Harry x |

I use a harness. I recommend harnesses because they are better for their necks. You can still teach them against pulling and running the marathon. I am going through that with Khloe right now. I do plan to get a retracable leash when she gets older. I use that with Kirby my older dog. The retracable gives them a more freedom but yet you can reel them in when needed. Just think if they are pulling and jerking this could really hurt their necks if you are using a collar. I use the collar for id and rabies tags only. More people are using harnesses even with large breed dogs. Its really pet friendlier. |
Sorry for the misspelling. I have been sick this week and on meds. |
Collars and leads We've only had our yorkie a few weeks and I only have a collar on him. My daughter bought my yorkie's brother and he is quite a handful...very strong willed and stubborn. She had a gentle leader from another dog, and has had fantastic results in getting him to submit and walk and not pull, etc. My yorkie is much more docile and I do not want to make him more fearful by using a gentle leader, but I see such a difference in her pup's behavior than before she began walking him on it. Any opinions about this? |

I met a lovely woman yesterday who custom makes harnesses and dog gear. www.codyscreations.com She has gazillons of different colors/patterns and said she can line the harnesses with satin to prevent hair damage. I'm having a huge issue with the mesh harness matting the hair on my yorkie/maltese mix. I have to brush him after ever walk. He doesn't mind being brushed once a day, but 3 times is getting on his nerves. I also ordered a step-in harness from Up Country. www.upcountry.com I've had great luck with them in the past for my mini schnauzers. Up Country started a line designed for toy breeds. I'll report back when I try the new harnesses. |
I would definitely recommend not using the collar and getting a harness. My boy has a collapsed trachea, due to his previous owner using a collar. |
