To Crate or not to Crate I am gettin a puppy sometimes in July and Im not sure about crating when trying to housebreak her .. I am home all the time and never crated my katie but it also took me 6 yrs to potty train her .... any suggestions ? or should I just use babygates and puppy pads |
I'd crate when I couldn't be right there watching the puppy so that it will make less mistakes and thus be drawn less to repotty where that scent is or just the memory of a previous potty. Crate-training is not jail when done right - it's just a place to keep them when you can't watch them constantly. The small expanse of the crate tends to encourage a pup want to hold its bladder/bowels as they don't want to soil their quarters, once they have that control, & this trains them to learn to hold it until you return to let them out to potty. The rest of the time, when you are able to watch them, no need to crate - they should be out in the home with you living the life of a puppy. Good luck to you and your new little one. |
I've never crated a dog to potty train it. (I've never outdoor trained a dog though...) I've always used a xpen (playpen, play yard) with a bed at one end & potty pads at the other. I praise like crazy and treat when she goes on the pads. Once I feel she understands the pad concept, I open up a side of the pen and give free reign in a room and still praise & treat at every good potty. Then, when she understands to go to the pads and no where else in the room, I allow access to more rooms, and then finally free reign in the house. |
