"Heel" is hard for yorkie pups?! Hello, my little girl Truffles just started class yesterday. we have to learn how to do "Heel" but she is so little and I have to knee down half way to show her treat .... walking "Heel" position is hard for me......:( Truffles sees treat on my hand... she jump walking to reach it instead of walking right next me.. Trainer said she is so little... but use the Hand for sing and hope she recognized the hand (without treat in it) so I don't have to bent down... it's a challenge!!! but fun.:D Is any one can tell me good tips for "Heel" training with yorkies? Thank you. Mtcoco |
Heel is hardest to train on any dog. I know it is awkward with a Yorkie, but think about at home, just doing 2-3 minutes of heeling at a time; so your back doesn't get so sore, and neither one of you get bored '-) It is lots of repetition that counts and daily short times much better than once a wk training. I just bend over from the waist and show treat to motivate dog to move, and begin each time with heel command I take one step, and then using treat bring dog into a sit when I stop. I have a park nearby that has a log bench. I've used that in the past with the dog up on bench and we do heeling exercise. |

We are start doing everyday little by little :) Treats are best friends of training?! LOL :D I will do my best with her. Thank you again. |
Dori's trainer suggested a long-handled wooden spoon with a small smear of peanut butter. Dori follows the spoon around as I carry it in my left hand at my side. Give the command as you move forward and let her have a little lick when she follows. good luck! |

You can get a little extending pointer, which you can keep in your pocket and then extend it out when you need it. It is a clicker training target stick but very good for getting them to focus without bending down all the time. |
Pocket Target Stick: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies Hope this link works this is the target stick that we use.:) |
I think heel is hard for a small dog, and in my world it isn't necessary. I opt for loose leash walking using the "with me" command. The dog walks along on a loose leash with me but is not so rigid and attentive. I think this command fits best for my dogs. But, that being said, no I don't think heel is that hard to teach. Come seems to be the most challenging command....especially with a yorkie. |
