Separation Anxiety Hi, We adopted a sweet yorkiepoo about 10days ago- she is now 11 weeks. We are having a real struggle with her, especially at night. The first few nights she didn't mind her crate, but now she goes crazy if we shut the door. So to help with that, we sectioned off a room, she had her crate (door open) and pee pads out, again-she did great for 2 nights. But now- she is having huge separation anxiety if left alone- in the crate, out of the crate, in the confined room. She cried for two hours straight tonight. We have a couch blocking one part of the confined room...her "cries" sounded different and sure enough she was stuck UNDER the couch. Finally I gave in and now I am sitting in our confined room, sitting on the couch typing this while she is sound alseep beside me (did I mention it is almost 1am??). Not sure what my next steps/options are. Should be we consider another puppy to keep her company? Will she grow out of it? Any advice would be much appreciated! |
well another puppy would be great to keep her company "if" you can fix this problem first otherwise you will have "2" screaming puppies waking you at 1 am, lol ! i would put the crate on the floor right next to the bed so she can see you. put a towel over the sides, put the shirt you were wearing that day in her bed. just put her in , don't say a word and turn out the light. try to resist getting up and taking her out of crate. she should get the idea after a few nights... |
Another puppy would be great if you can do it. I can't help much Georgie was in a crate for 15 minutes whining at 10 weeks and we took him out and he hasn't been in one since;) |

Also practice with her during the day. Put her in her cage during nap time and when she doesn't have your full attention. Reward her for good behavior with lots of praise or a tiny treat like a cheerio. Try to practice getting her to go into her cage on her own. Here is a link to my web site with some tips that I use to train my pups with great success: Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies Ohio Hope it helps. |
