Marking.....totally lost We got our Peanut from a family who couldn't potty train him. They just built a new house and didn't want him anymore because they were afraid he would ruin their carpet. I have always been able to potty train our 2 labs easily so I thought, "no problem, I can do this and give this baby a great new home". Peanut was 2 when we brought him home and it didn't take me a few hours to see that this little guy just wasnt potty trained but he was marking. After speaking with the vet who told me basically it's a bad habit and just deal with it. Peanut was not neutered when we got him so a few months later I had it done. He wears a band that I bought from Petsmart and it keeps my floor free of urine but I wish I could break him. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
Maybe attach him to you for awhile. So you can keep a constant watch and correct bad behavior And reward good behavior. Other ways would be to keep him in a expen when you can not watch him. It will take lots of patience. |
The problem might be bigger than both of you. I have a little guy who is great about pottying on the pads or outside if I'm there to take him and it's "convenient" for him. But he's just as happy lifting his leg on the baseboard or the entertainment center if there's no compelling reason not to. I don't agree with the folks who abandon their Yorkies because of potty issues, but I think I understand it. It's a mess... I made belly bands out of chamois cloths and sanitary pads, and it saves the carpet. I don't just band them up and leave them. I let them out on a schedule that encourages going outside. But if you have to choose between banding your Yorkie and keeping him/her, and letting the dog roam and ruining your home, then I say, "band the dog!" I swear Maxie comes over to me now to say his "sham-wow" is wet and needs to be changed. |
I think using a belly band for a few months will help to break the habit. Clean the old favorite spots with an enzymatic cleaner a few times to get rid of the scent, that will also help him to forget. |
