If your Yorkie is housetrained, which came first? Pee or poop? Inside pad, outside, or both? How long did it take? Please elaborate! |
1 Attachment(s) Oscar is potty trained to a litterbox which uses a grate and pad underneath. I tried the potty pads alone, disposable and washable. He was not interested in either, he preferred carpet..... I got the litterbox using the grate and it took a couple of weeks of constantly putting him in it and saying "go potty". If he even walked on it on his own i gave a treat. One day he just walked in and went pee on his own. Then next came poo. I still give treats every time he uses it. Now he uses it 100 % He only goes potty outside occasionally , we are still working on that. he is almost 7 months old.. |
Tibbe goes outside, which I think is more natural for them if you have access to a yard or good area for it. He'd only lived in a crate for 9 mo. when I got him so we had to start with a strict schedule and from scratch. But now he's totally clean in the house. It can be done. |
ZoE is pad trained (so was my last yorkie). ZoE potty trained in just a few weeks, and as I got her very young, she was fully trained by the time most people get their puppies. The key for me has always been to set them up to succeed. Create a very small space (I used a playpen & removed panels) with just enough room for a small bed & pee pad, and as soon as they pee on the pad, praise like crazy and treat. After eating & drinking, hold them...for some reason they don't like to relieve themselves on you...then put them down on a pad and if they go praise & treat, and if they don't pick them up again and pet on them and then repeat the process. Keep doing it until they go on the pad and then praise & treat. With both my yorkies, they each had the full run of my house and (went)go no where but on the pads. ZoE is a year old and I still praise & treat when I'm home & she goes on her pad. When I've been gone, I walk to her pad and look at the pee pads & tell her good girl and praise & treat again. You've got to be consistent if you want them to be consistent. |
My pups always went pee on the papers before they knew to go poo on them. I would say that all four of mine were totally trained to go potty outside within 5-6 months with the occ accident on the papers. |
Bella is pad trained and it took a few months.....when I take her outside she poops and pee..and she look at me to see if I'm going to scream NO! ...because when she was pad training and she pooped or pee'd on the floor I would scream NO...But now that she knows its ok to pee and poop outside she do both....Pad and outside...Pad training came first because I was afraid to take her outside and she was only a puppy and hadnt had her shots...Oh and she pee and poop on the pad all at the same time |
Kiko goes outside. It took maybe a month for her to be completely accident free. At first it was taking her out when I thought she might need to go, after eating, when she woke up, before bed, etc. when she would go potty outside, I would give her lots of praise. I didn't give any reaction to accidents, just cleaned it up. At first, I kept her gated in the kitchen when she wasn't sitting with me or playing with me in the living room. But that was too much space and she would potty on one side of the room and sleep, eat and play on the other. I moved her to the hall off the living room so she had less space and she potty trained very quickly after that. I have the baby gates that have a solid plastic panel (I was worried she would climb the traditional style ones). One has a frosted panel, but the other is clear, so she could see us in the living room and we could see her too. When she first started asking to go out, she would just sit by the door. So if she was running loose in the house, I had to have eyes on her every second. Now she will paw the door. If I don't notice, she will walk over to me and then back to the door. If no one has notice after that or she really needs to go now, she will bark at the door(doesn't happen very often). |
Number 2 came very quickly to my two- they both had very few accidents of that variety when they were new pups and now never ever have them- but the other is a different story all together- mine are 3 and almost 5 and still not 100% reliable- ehh- they are cute or they would be out on the street! I am pretty sure I keep Nature's Miracle in business. |
Poop came first.lol I started with pads just because I've always trained mine to use both and I work the pads toward the door, then I move the pads to the garage. The reasoning for that is inclement weather. She did train quickly though. I can remember the exact time that I knew she got it, too. I was lecturing her while I was cleaning a spot. Now don't tell me she couldn't possibly understand, because she had no further accidents except for two after she was spayed.:D |
