How do you get #1 & #2 in the same trip? Day 10 of puppy being home and he is doing great on housebreaking. When we go out, he goes #1 right away and then wants to play or heads right back into the house. He definitely gets the idea. Wondering if there is anything I can do to encourage him to do both #1 & #2 while we're outside in one trip. Right now #2 happens 3 times/day. But it always seems to be 15-20 minutes after we come in from #1. Is it something he'll outgrow or should I be doing something to encourage him? Also, when did you start letting your dog go outside on his/her own to take care of business? |
i normally stand out there with them especially the 1st potty of the day until they all have done #1 and #2...throughout the day they normally just do #1 the many times we go out and if they need to do #2. if you know that #2 usually happen 20 minutes after #1 either stay out there until it's done or take him back out in 15-20 minutes |

Do your dogs do both within a few minutes? Or is the 15 minute delay pretty normal? |
I used treats pretty heavily while potty training Roxy. I would give her a bite sized treat after each job. Some days she is pretty quick about doing both. Other days she is more interested in what is going on outside around her (she loves the outdoors). I would say 15 minutes would be about normal for her to do both though. |

Oh and I should have clarified. I always give him 15 minutes outside. #1 happens within the first minute. Then I wait as long as I can and go in. He needs to go back out 15 after being in the house. |
I found urging Tibbe to run more when outside to potty would stimulate his #2 faster than if he were just outside sniffing around and taking his time. After his immediate #1, it would take him anywhere from 5 - 20 minutes to get to Part Deux. I decided I was going to have to stimulate his bowel more so I would toss a ball or toy around for his to chase and #2 started coming much faster than if just left to his own devices. And that's when I would treat him - only after #2. |

In the morning, Mrs. Beasley won't go out until she has ate. Then we go out for #1. Back in and she wants to eat dry kibble. Then we go back out for #2. She will not go unless she eats first and in between. She has me trained very well. Best wishes with your potty training routine. |
I not sure if this will be any help.. But we just walked Corky. After a walking for about 5 minutes he does #2. |
And something else to keep in mind, puppies usually/typically go #2 about 20 minutes after they have eaten a meal. Good luck! |
All very helpful. Thanks everyone! I'm glad to know this is "normal" and not me messing up the potty training. :) Thanks for the tip on walking too. So far my guy doesn't really "walk" he just sniffs like a mad man...we don't make it very far! That's definitely on our list of things to learn. |
