Walking Three Anyone have any tips, hints, or suggestions? It's going ok, but it could be better. Thank you! |

that you hook to a single leash then one to each dog. Good luck |
I walk five at a time by myself and it can be hectic sometimes but for the mose part we do ok and I do use couplers |
I can't do it. I take two at a time and come back and someone goes twice. We try to be fair about who goes twice, but sometimes the one who begs the most wins. I'm sorry I have no good suggestions. |
I have a hard time walking two! I feel like a crazy lady with my arms going every which way - the dogs going this way and that .. . . I'm thinking couplers are going to be your only answer if they are all near the same size. |
Kim, When I was the boys and Friday I use a coupler with the boys and Friday gets to be on her own. The main reason I do this is because the boys are 12 and 9 lbs and Friday is just over 5 lbs. The boys walk faster to. |

Do most pet stores carry a coupler? |
How do they walk individually? Take the two best walkers in one hand, and the worst walker in the other hand. Or start out with just two. While they are learning, walk at a very brisk pace. Go to an area and stop and let them sniff around. Then, get walking briskly again. Eventually they will learn to pee and poo at the same time rather than stop, start, stop, start, etc. Or can you be more specific of the problems you are having? Note: I now walk mine individually. Just the other day a neighbor's lab and her Pit Bull came charging at me and Sapphire. I heard growling and turned and saw them running at us at breakneck speed. I had just enough time to pick her up and hide her inside my jacket. The dogs were on us before I heard the owner trying unsuccessfully to call them off. They didn't bite me, only gave me a heart attack. I keep thinking what would have happened if I had all 4 of mine walking that day. This is only one of 5-6 encounters with loose dogs, hence my decision to walk them separately. I didn't use couplers bc mine would attack each other out of frustration when they can't get to a dog in a yard.... |
Each has to be trained separately. I walk 3 a lot easily but I can't say I totally enjoy it. Well, with our 3 (my dads two and Jackson) it's not bad, because they are kind of a little "pack" and tend to walk well together. I walk them around our neighborhood as well as walking them thru campgrounds, etc, and it's never been TERRIBLE but the only issue I have is when you have to pick up poop. That's REALLY annoying with three because you are trying to get the bag out, one is going, the other two are trying to continue to walk, lol... so it's kind of a mess during that. But I think it just depends on the dogs as well as the amount of training each has had. I'd google loose leash walking techniques, etc, and work with each individually. |
Thanks for the help, everyone. We had it great for the first week, because George was here with me to help, but now that he's gone home, I'm learning to walk with the three. All are good to walk with, but I do worry about keeping everyone safe when cars or other dogs approach. I know I have to switch out the retractable leashes for conventional ones, but then they can drag the ground and tangle the dog's feet and legs. I need to get a system down, and I know it's just going to take time. I'm also going to at least look at the couplers, though I'm not sure if it will work or not. I just want to keep everyone safe. |
My worst two walk better together on retractable leashes. I had stopped using the retractables, but bc we're off the beaten path I can give them a little bit of freedom, as I never let them go off leash completely. Just too many hazards! On regular leashes, I have to tie a knot in them as my hands are smallish. The knot snugs the handhold so it will stay on my hand even if I let it go. Also, I stand with the dogs, then choke up on the leashes so they're all about even before we begin walking. I keep them on a short leash until they start to get a little tired, then I loosen up a few inches at a time, if they're acting right. |
Thanks, Kathy! I can visualize exactly what you are saying. I'll give it a try tomorrow. We've been doing about a mile, twice a day. Walking is so good for all of us, so I really want to make this work. |
It will get easier... |
I always carry treats and reward for staying close to me. When a car comes, I say "close" and walk to the side of the road, treating excessively. They've learned that good things happen when I say close. |
