need some advice...problems with overnight potty i got miles when he was 4 months old, and i've been working towards potty training since then.. he's now 6 months old and i would say hes about 80% trained. when i am home, i take him outside every three hours, and he knows what he's supposed to do and does it every time. if i am not home, he stays in an enclosure with pee pads on one side and his bed and toys on the other side. the main problem i'm having, is overnight.. he sleeps on the bed with me, and at some point in the middle of the night he jumps down, piddles on the floor, and jumps back up. i've started taking his water dish up at 6pm, and i take him outside at least twice before bedtime.. and he still pees at night. i've also tried using a male wrap, the idea being that they don't pee while they're wearing it because they don't want to get wet, but miles pees in his anyway, which causes an uncomfortable looking rash. the only other solution i can think of is to make him sleep in his enclosure.. but i like him sleeping in the bed with me, curled up on my pillow. i'd rather not put him in his enclosure at night unless it's my last resort. would anyone happen to have any suggestion on what i can do to make him stop peeing the floor overnight? |
Can you withhold liquids within two to three hours of bedtime? Be sure he is otherwise hydrated during the day and early evening but just until he gets a bit more control, might try that. He apparently just cannot hold all that fluid in his little bladder all the night long so maybe he's getting too much water or water in his food or his bladder is still developing. You might have to get him a small airline type carrier and let him sleep in that in the bed with you for a bit as his bladder develops. I used one of those for Tibbe until I was sure he could hold it all night. I would stick my fingers through the mesh door and he would put his little face up against my fingers and we would sleep that way. Being in a small carrier like that does tend to encourage a dog that does have the ability to hold its urges until it gets out of the confinement. If he soils that, it is a problem or development issue with his bladder probably. Might try letting him outside every 4 hours rather than 3 to see if he can learn to hold it longer. Or he could have developed a UTI and needs a vet check/treatment. |
well, i take his water away from him at 7pm, and bedtime is usually 10pm or later depending on what my work schedule is like, and i always take him out one final time before bed. i guess i could take his water up at 6 or give him less water? i would hate to restrict his water too much and then he's dehydrated.. he doesn't eat any wet food and the kibble he eats is blue buffalo life protection formula for small breed puppies.. i just checked and the moisture content is 10%, is that high for a dry food? should i switch him to something else? i do have a travel carrier that i use when i take him places, i will try having him sleep in that with me tonight.. though i'm not sure how much he's going to like it, lol. he was also just examined by a vet a few days ago and given a clean bill of health. this morning when i woke up i didn't see any pee puddles on the floor.. so maybe we are making progress |
