Spay question Hey guys! I've looked around for a thread on this already but couldn't find any, sorry if its already been done. My Winnie is going to get spayed on tuesday and i was just wondering if there was anything i should be expecting or anything i need to do to make the recovery time easier on her. All the vet told us was to not have her eat the night before but she could have water, and that afterwards she will have to not be so active for a few days and wear a cone. My question is how are you supposed to stop this little bugger from running around and jumping on things, should i crate her for the entire few days?? That just seems mean to me but if she's not crated she's likely to jump up on things and run around? Many of you have been through this before i'm sure, any tips!?? Please! |
Tink just got spayed 9 days ago:) I did not use an E-collar on her. I bought some baby Onsies, cut a hole for her tail and kept those on her. It kept her from her stitches without that terrible collar. When she came home from the vet she was groggy and just wanted to sleep. By the next morning she was a little more perky but still on the quiet side. It can be hard to keep them calm while recovering. Just do the best you can and don't freak out over the occassional jump or running around:) |
an x pen, enogh room to be confortable but confined enogh not to jump and open the stiches, the baby onesies work wonderfully, or the Kiss E Collar, my harry was neutered last month and he is an escape artist, he can get off any onesie, so I got a Kiss E Collar from Bo and it worked wonderfull and when I had to do something that I could not watch him I put him in the x pen, and at night I did crate him . best of luck with your girl.. hugs, |
Be sure to speak with your vet about pain meds. People often assume that pups don't have pain because they hide it. I always give my pups pain meds for about 3 days following a spay. |
Brandy just was spayed almost a month ago.. I didn't feed her late the evening before. I made sure I cleaned her area really good with a mix of bleach and water.. I washed her blanket and had it ready for her..The morning of I took her for a good walk she when twice and then I took her in... I did ask about pain meds but the tech gave her a high dose so she was just fine.. when she saw her blanket she cuddle right in it and fell a sleep.. I used the econe for that first day and for bed..but I got a few new baby onesies and a belly band so she could be free from the cone. the kiss cone is cute and easy to.. i wish I got one for Brandy because it looks confortable.. if you want to get one you can buy one here one of our other mommies make them.. as for getting your pup to stop jumping I gave Brandy a short walk in the morning.. then feeding play for 25min potty and rest... then I woke her up made her go potty again then some more play and reminding her not to jump.. then rest again.. woke her up again then short walk and night feeding then little play and then bed time by 8:30pm she was good.. only thing is she forgot her potty training so I had to start over again.. I feel if you keep to your normal routine everything will be well.. lots of rest is the best.. and healing time will go by before you know it..:) |
Onesie or e-collar if she chews the sutures or when you can't watch. Pain meds to take home. No running, jumping, and preferably no climbing for 7-10 days. An xpen or playpen is fine. You could hold her. Otherwise, yes, she needs to be in a crate. Accidents happen. Abscesses form, suture problems come up. Not worth the risk. She will be okay confined for a few days. |
Abby actually did better without the pain meds, she was all crazy and running around way more than normal, I called the vet, said she would be fine without them. So day two she finally "came down" and slept and laid around a bit. She had a few teeth removed and was more comfortable eating without the double canines! |
When I had my two spayed/neutered, they were groggy the entire day of the surgery and slept most of the time. Luckily, I was able to stay with them during their recovery period, so they did not need to wear cones and they did not lick their incisions. Just make sure to keep her still and make sure to get pain meds. She will be back to normal before you know it! |
