new puppy training questions hey there, i am new to the forums and to yorkies, my husband and i purchased an 8 week old little girl, named molly and we're already head over heels in love with the little thing as is our two year old chihuahua/s**tzu mix. i did read the threads above on training and have already started her on a schedule and so far she's done great peeing outside instead of in the house. however, we've not been able to get her to poop outside, she always waits until she comes in no matter how long we keep her out there. any suggestions on how to get her to do ALL of her business outside? our other question is about crate training, every time we put her in there she cries/screams for anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. we've read to never take her out when she's fussing and to praise her when she's silent for at least 5 minutes but nothing seems to lessen how upset she is which is especially troubling at night when we're trying to sleep. any suggestions would be wonderful |
Hi! My hubby and i got a new pup about a month ago as well. As for the pooping outside she won't do it either. She wont even pee outside here. Although i'm convinced its cuz its too cold out there, seeing as its almost too cold for me especially with the snow. As for the crate training, we were having the exact same problem at night, she would just cry and cry and wouldn't stop until finally we took her crate into the bedroom with us. She's still locked inside but now she doesnt even make a peep! They just love being in the same room as you. WHen she starts to wine now i just give her a little SHHHH and she stops and goes right to sleep. Good luck! |
She pooped outside for the first time last night and was actually pretty quite last night, so that was a blessing. Unfortunately, she's refused to poop outside since. so frustrating, guess it's all about patience |

I too was going to mention taking her crate into your room - it seems to work brilliantly when they can see/smell you! We did that with Harry from day 2, and have never looked back. He goes in there of his own accord, when he's had enough of us! Sleeps from 10 p.m until whenever we wake him in the morning - lovely! :D Good luck with it all! Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
Wow...8 weeks? Most pups are still with their moms and siblings. No wonder she cries at night. Putting her close to you is the best thing to do. Maybe, a warm water bottle under her blankie for comfort. I found if Dori could see me, she was fine with the crate at night. At 8 weeks, your pooch would have to be taken out of her crate frequently for potty. So, little sleep for you. During the day, she will need constant monitoring. She should basically be attached to your hip so you can get used to her signals for pee and poo. A regular schedule is essential...always go out after sleep, play or eating. Don't expect miracles until your baby has matured; look for consistency around 6 months. Good luck! |
