Potty training- letting you know they need to go out My puppy Nelly is about 5.5 months old now, we've had her about 3.5 months. She's doing great with her potty training- as long as we take her out EVERY hour. I can not get her to let me know when she needs to go out, she doesn't go to the door and the worst is she doesn't wake me up at night, she just recently started jumping off the bed then crying to get back up, which tells me if she jumped down there's a puddle I need to go find. I love having her in bed with me but I feel it's best to crate her again until I figure out what to do. Any ideas, tips or advice? |
I don't know if this would work, but I am teaching my little Lexi (almost 4 months now) to ring a bell I hooked to the door. She isn't really barking so much right now, so I figured she couldn't really tell me when she wanted to go out. I just put the bells there hanging down and I would ring them each time we went out and say 'potty' and pretty soon, she was pawing at the bells. I won't say it is 100 percent of the time, and she is pretty young, but it seems to be working. |
So sometimes they are talking but we aren't listening. Lilly wasn't telling me I thought......... She would "go" when I walked her but I would still find lil piddles. She would sit on my lap or near me on the sofa, or on the bed... and often she would crawl up into my lap and kiss my face, over and over. I thought she was just so cute. It took me 3 months to connect the dots, when she licked my chin wagging her tail. pawing my chin. She was telling me it was time. It has never occurred to her to stand by the door and bark or whine at me across the room whine she could just as easily look me in the eye. I have to tell you once she got through to my thick head what she was trying to say she was very pleased. I kept telling people she was like un-trainable. And I was the one the whole time who wasn't listening. We don't have accidents any more. |
We wondered the same thing when Cody was little. We read the posts about bells and decided it probably wouldn't work for Cody - he's what is termed an "aggressive chewer". We figured if we hung up bells, he'd just chew them up(he's not that bad now that he's older). So we started watching his "body language", particularly at night while watching TV. He would "look" at the door. We started asking if he wanted to go out. He would start to get excited. We would take him out. If we didn't respond as quickly as he wanted, he would make a low cry. Later he would stand at the door and bark, then look at us. He's now 2 years old and he's quite impatient if we don't move as quickly as he would like (who has who trained?). The only downside is that he will bark and go to the door when he just wants to go out.....like in the morning when we go for a walk. Fortunately, he didn't start that until we had already established a "communication network" with Cody. |
Bailey rings a desk service bell that we keep by the backdoor. It gets lots of laughs. When we were potty training I took her paw to the bell on our way out the door and said let's go potty! Good luck! |
I too used the bell with Ladybug. I would ring the bell and say "potty" each time she would eat or drink or first thing in the morning. She caught on really fast. She uses her nose to tap the bell! I'm sure your little one will get it too! |
