Sit Hi guys! You are probably going to think I'm nuts but I have a question on the 'sit' command. I know this is the easiest and most basic command, but I have a problem. Katie Scarlett graduated puppy kindergarten and is now in the next course at our local dog training center. She can sit on command with food. Does great with it. But we have a pop quiz next Saturday. She is supposed to sit with one command, no food. Every time I try to get her to sit with no food, she just absolutely will not do it. She just stares at me and is like 'where is the treat?' What do I do? How can I get her to sit on command with no food? We also have to do 'down' on one command, no food, but let's tackle one thing at a time. LOL. |
When Kiko first learns a new command, she won't do it unless a treat is involved either. After Kiko is used to doing a command for food treats, I will start using it when we play fetch; if she wants me to throw the toy, she has to complete the command. After she does well with doing it for toys, then she will usually do the comand when she is told (unless she is too excited, then her ears just don't seem to work). Oh, something that helps her get the hang of commands faster is lots of short "training" sessions, just a few minutes at a time, but multiple times a day, be sure to keep it fun for both of you. Maybe one of the members with more training experience can offer more/better advice. Good luck to you both on the test. |
Start giving treats intermittently and use praise always. Sometimes it helps to hold your hand palm upward when you give the command. If you aren't already doing it, put the treat in your hand, palm facing up above her. That may help to trick her when you don't have a treat. Also try having her sit for everything so that a treat isn't the only reward she associates it with. Maximo learned that if he wants anything, all he has to do is perform a sit in front of me. How can I say no to play time, or going for a walk, or serving a meal when he performs sits? For down, I held my fingers together in front of the boys' noses as if I had a treat. Good luck with the tests! |
