When will she ask? I think I'm the one who is trained. Christabel does great on going potty outside when I stay on schedule and carry her out. My question is when will she start asking to go out? I know she is still young, she is only four months old. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I expecting to much to soon? Thanks in advance. I have learned so much from all the wonderful people on this forum. |
No you are not expecting to much. She is old enough to know when she needs to go. My four were completely trained between 5-8 months old. My male was took the longest. They got to sleep in our rooms at night but still went to their cage when we left the home. Up to bout a year old until I could trust them to be on their best behavior and have no accident in the house. The key is to get her to come to you to ask to go out potty! This is how I taught my four pup to come to me. First they must know their "name" and the command "come". Than each time before you take her out you call her to you (Christabel, Come) than in a excited tone of voice ask her if she needs to go potty. The goal is to get her excited about potty time. Do the same after her meals, while you are standing in the kitchen. Anywhere and everywhere you are in the house. If you do this every time before taking her out she will soon start coming to you. When you are outside with her make sure she knows that potty time is something good and that she gets praised for. |
She is pretty young. I would give her time and also it is better to let her walk out with you when you take her out, instead of carrying her. This teaches her the motions involved in heading outside. (unless of course you have to make a quick exit if she is about to have an accident) I highly recommend bell training. If you do a search here on "poochie bells" or bell training, you will get a lot of great info. I trained my Yorkie with bells and she picked up on it very quickly. I believe we have to train our furkids to tell us when they need to go, we shouldn't expect them to just figure it out. |
Great advise, thanks. That makes alot of sense. I have just been picking her up and carrying her out, give her lots of praises and good girls. She doesn't have a problem gong out. If I'm not watching like a hawk she will have a mistake in the house. It was time for her to go out a few minutes ago and I did as you said. Called her to come and she did. Then I asked her if she needed to go outside and she went to the door. She did her business and got lots of praise and loving on. Thanks again. |
Thanks Mary Kay, I did try the bell. She would go over and ring it (quite a bit) just to go outside not necessarily to potty. I researched and found some info on it. It suggested putting the bell only where I could ring it to start with. And only ring it when she goes outside to potty. That way she'll learn to just ring it to potty not just to go outside. So every time we go out to potty I ring it. Maybe after a week or so I'll put it down to her level again. I knew I could count on the yt forum. I love this site. Thanks again. |

She got bored with ringing it just for fun after a few weeks and learned to do it just when she has to go (she actually rings it for my other dogs to go out now too :) I think if you stick with it, you will be surprised at how quickly she learns to do it, and won't be dissapointed in the value of using a bell. Especially when you are in another part of the house, you can hear the bell. It is a wonderful tool for sure. |
LOL I have one too that just loved to ring the bell any old time; but particularly if there were the dreaded squirrels or daring birds in the yard. |

I also agree that she should be walking with you to the door (use the same door and works each time.) |
