So very disappointed in his behavior today at PetSmart... Rocco was NOT nice to other dogs today in PetSmart...he barked at the bigger dogs, tried to SNAP at a Shar-Pei puppy, and was generally not very nice. He's done this before only occasionally. I swear he is getting LESS well-behaved as he gets older! He is a very, very good boy at home (except for his increased barking!) and generally when we're out. Do I need to start training all over again? He socializes about once per week at doggy daycare, and they say he is just a little angel while there. Any advice? |
not sure how old he is but my patrick is 15 wks and had him and Vienna at the vets in the waiting room the other nite and he was growling at snarling at another yorkie and a bulldog puppy like he was some kind of rottweiler .He and Vienna were in one of those large size sherpa carry bags, I took him out and he was fine on my lap.:p |
If he's OK at doggy daycare -- when you are not there -- it might have something to do with him being possessive of you. When you're there, he gets protective or possessive. When you're not there, he has no need to make the others stay away from "his hooman." |

Yorkies will take over if they feel Mommie or Daddie isn't doing enough in any given situation... If he feels threatened or thinks you are threatened, he'll step up and handle the situation. Minor corrections (Ah, ah) and a short leash as you approach and deal with the new dog/puppy (petting it). Once he knows you're in control, he'll hopefully 'give it up'. |

Coincidentally, I started talking to a Pet Trainer (worked there) that had a Weimaraner with her. She explained to let the other dog correct him...her dog simply ignored Rocco then he stopped, since his behavior was ineffective. But the problem, she agreed, is that he needs to learn to just ignore other dogs if not interested, not try to boss them around. I think I'm going to bring him to some training classes to correct him. |
