Potty Training - Use the same phrase for going "Poo" or "Pee"? So I try to watch my dog like a hawk when he's roaming around the house. i also partially Crate and Play Pen train him when I'm away or busy during the day. Anyways he's pretty good when he's at my house and will poop or pee about 75% of the time on the pad and 25% of the time around or in the corners of my apartment. What I try to do is say "Go Potty" over and over again in a calm fashion as he is pooping OR peeing on the pad. Then I follow it instantly with praise once he is finished and usually a treat. Should I be using the same word "Go Potty" for both Pee and Poo? It's quite frustrating when he seems to forget where to go and he will sometimes Pee on the pad then go poop a few minutes later in the corner even when I'm watching him. Or vice versa (poop on a pad then Pee in the corner usually a different corner because I always clean up really well) (Frustrated) thanks |
That's how I train with my CaLi...I say "go potty" for both..when we walk I say 'go potty' and she'll pee, then I have to tell her again 'go potty' to remind her to get the second half of the job done...hahaha. CaLi seems to do the same thing with the pad. She will pee on it in her Graco playpen No Prob at all....but going poo, ugh!!!! She will go behind a chair on the bed, the ottoman, kitchen anywhere she can be alone when youre not looking. Only two or three times I've had her actually poo on the pad...and that was after whining like she was dying. I'm curious as to how to fix this irritating problem. Thanks for posting it as I will wait for a response as well. Just know you're not alone :) |
I use go potty for the yorkie for both poo and pee but with my 6 year old terrier mix, it's a bit different! I use "Go on the rocks" for him which is something I started doing with my Rottie when I was taking care of my Mom and living at her house back in the late 90's. My mom hated when the dogs went on the grass so I taught her to go on the rocks and it just stuck. He also knows go poopy too. |

If you watch him and know when he has the urge to go, why than are you not taking him out side. Is it your goal to potty train him to not go potty in your home. Normally pads or papers are used for accidents for those times when you are not home or do not see his nose to the ground in search of a place to potty. Do you have access to a yard or out door area for him? |
Nope I don't have any yard I live in an apartment in Los Angeles. There are lots of weird dogs roaming the streets that could have diseases. Hes only 14 wks and needs his last shots...I will eventually train him to go in and outside that's my goal. But yeah I've noticed he will often pee on the pad more than poop. He poops all over the place or at least tries to and I have to say AH AH AHH. loudly to stop him. And try to have him poop on the pad Any thoughts on transitionimg him to outside in a few wks? I've been putting grass on his pee pads to have him associate grass with potty |
We use one phrase for both. At 14 weeks, he's still not understanding totally about the pad, obviously, but one day soon, it will click. You will see it the day he gets it. Can you try to put 2 pads down so he can have a choice. The reasoning for this is that this way as soon as the urge hits him, he will be able to find one or the other. As he gets older, you can start to move the pad over to the other and eliminate one of them. It just takes a lot of patience but it will come. Good luck. |

One thing I have noticed with Romeo -- if the wee pad is wet and he can smell his urine on it he will not do his poo. Even if I fold the pad so that he can go on the dry part he will walk over to it and pee again so that I have no choice but to give him a clean, dry pad for him to poo! |

A pup is triggered by scent! That is why they have their nose to the ground in search of just the right place to go. When you use papers you layer them two to three layers deep. When changing them out for fresh ones, you always take the layer from the bottom of the stack and place them on top of the new layers. That way their scent is there and will encourage potty on the papers. As for the poo (This may be gross, but it works) take a bit form an accident and place it on the papers. Just until they get the hint. That this is where I should be doing it. (You will need to replace it with fresh poo from time to time) just until they get the hang of things. One good way to get your pup on the right track to transition to out door potty time is to have the potty area close to the door. That way they associate the door with potty time. Maybe even have his leash hanging close to the door. Having a set routine for potty time will also help. I am in no way an expert, I can only tell you what has worked for me with the hopes that it can do the same for you. I have had much success with training all four of my Yorkies... and have added the steps on my web site. Take a look and hopefully it will work for you as well.
