Pawing at face So Geno has been fairly well behaved but recently he's been starting to paw at our faces. I'm the type of owner that loves to get in his face and give him little kisses but I think he thinks I'm playing or whatever and he'll paw at my face. I can't blame him for doing it but it's obviously a behavior that should be corrected. Due to him pawing last night, his claw caught my nose and gave me a bloody nose. He seems to do this to other dogs as well. Have any of your puppies done this? If so, how did you correct it? This just started maybe 2-3 weeks ago. When he first would do it, I would tell him, "don't paw mommy's money maker" haha Obviously that isn't going to teach him to not do it. And for a little bit, I figured it was cause he thought we were playing but now it's to the point that he needs to stop it. |
Also last night, he actually seemed like he was trying to be agressive towards me. I was playing with him and he would show his teeth and try to come at my face but he didn't nip or bite me. My boyfriend and I were really surprised cause he never did that before. |
Maybe some whining noises and/or putting him down and ignoring him will help. Jimmy used to bite at my fingers a lot and I started doing both and he doesn't do that anymore. |
Well we used to do a loud shrilled "yip" noise when he would play bite but it never worked. He has for the most part just grown out of the play biting now that he isn't teething too much. I was thinking about doing the whole ignoring bit but was just wondering if he would catch on that he's being ignored because of what he's doing. I know a lot of people suggest it but I just don't think he gets that I'm ignoring him because he's acting inappropriately. |
Hmm, don't know what else you could really do if "No" doesn't work and "Yip" doesn't work with the exception of ignoring him. Hmm, maybe a raspberry back at him? ;) |

Well he does roll over on his back for belly rubs but I think if I got anywhere close to his tummy with my face, he'd run away haha |

I mean I don't really like people in my face either but he doesn't have to be so rude about it lol I think if I want my face in his, I should be able to. I'm the owner. I don't know. That's just how I feel. |

I would keep up with the "No" and ignoring for a bit, show him who is boss. And if he doesn't want your lovin' today, he will miss it tomorrow lol ;) |
lol It's just so sad cause I always try loving on him. I guess I will stick to my kisses to the butt! haha Well not really his butt but his back side. At first, he hated them and would get annoyed when I'd do it, but after continually doing it, he just lets it happen. I tell him, "imma kiss ur wittle butt" *smooch* hahah Sometimes I think there is something wrong with me and my love for my furbaby :p |
My truffles use to do this ! I tell her to be nice ! And that seems to work really well. She would also nip but the BE NICE, Worked for that too. When we are done playing I just say be nice and cuddle and kiss her with no problem :D |

I hope my little furbaby, Jimmy, doesn't do this! I'd be the same as you...."You'll take my kissies and you'll like it!!!" However, Jimmy has started licking my nose the past couple of nights/mornings to get me up outta bed. =_= So I'm the grumpy one pawing at his face :p |

What I do when Chloe does this kind of stuff is give her the Ceasar Millan "CCCCCHHH" and lock my eyes on her with a serious look, she will totally freeze and almost start shaking! It's amazing what a sound and a serious look can do... |
We did that sound with Geno and he definitely does not like it. Not too sure if he understands that we mean not to do it anymore. The serious look doesn't really work with him. When I say no sternly to him and stare at him with a serious look, he feels the need to bark like crazy at me and then get the zoomies. He's nuts. Hoping his neutering will calm him down. |
What I did with Chloe when she wouldn't listen to my CCCCHHHH was to hold her in my lap, making sure I held her in a way that she couldnt nip at me, and just give her the look and the sound, she would go nuts and try to get off but I just kept holding her and she would calm down after a minute or two and actually start giving me kisses instead! I think the neutering will probably help, but I also think trying to show them who is in charge in a non aggressive way is a good thing! |

I totally agree with you. The holding down is definitely something we do try to do. My boyfriend mainly does it when Geno is being bad whether it is towards my boyfriend or towards me. He squirms for a little but eventually he calms down. The breeder showed us how to hold put him on his back and hold him but he's gotten a little too big to do it so we just hold him tight to our chest so he can listen to our heartbeat. |
1 Attachment(s) Sophie does the same thing and she's 3 yrs old. My husband woke up a couple weeks ago with a scratch on his upper lip. She did it while he was sleeping. She will scratch your face or hand when she wants you to pet her or your legs if she wants picked up! I'm trying to make lasagna right now, and here she is: |

haha awee so cute! :) I don't mind if I get pawed on the hand or leg. I just take that as a simple sign of "hey mommy pick me up" or "hey mommy pet me please!" haha but I just don't think the paw on my face is too nice. I mean I can pretty much tell he's saying "hey mommy i'm playing with you" but I don't play like that lol And pretty sure he wouldn't like it if I touched his face with my hand. That's one place he really doesn't like to be touched unless he's very tired and then he just gets a bunch of kisses on his cheek from me :) |
I know what you mean! Their little nails hurt like heck on you face. We always tell her "NO" but she just doesn't get it. |
