Need some advice Hi, i'm new here, and i'm getting a yorkie in two months and i've been wanting one for years! So my family is getting me one for Christmas. I'm also doing my research on the internet about them. And one of my questions is we have a daycare in our home so hes going to need to be used to alot of different people coming in the house, so what would be the best way to do that? Im assuming to socialize him and just let everyone that comes in hold him and give him treats? And another question is what should I do when I first get him, because of noisy kids, like should he be more sheilded from the noiseyness and bussiness for the first couple weeks or could he be downstairs with everyone right away. We also teach the kids very well about being by a puppy, and when my brother visits he brings his jack russel puppy so they know to be very gentle. I just dont know how soon to show him the kids. And i'm going to get him on a friday night so he will atleast have the weekend without kids. Any help is appreciated, thanks. |
Welcome to YT, fellow Alaskan :) Here's my .02, and it's just an opinion. I'm no expert. A lot of people say Yorkies and kids don't mix. Some breeders won't even sell to a family with young kids, their reasoning being Yorkies are delicate and kids don't understand that. I know of Yorkies who have broken legs, or worse, when falling from heights or being stepped on. And yes, they are more delicate than a JRT. That said, I know many families who have kids and Yorkies and get by just fine. The parents teach the kids how to interact with them and how to be gentle. So that brings us to the daycare. If it were me, I would never allow a Yorkie to interact with a group of daycare kids unless someone was designated to supervise the Yorkie -- and not the person designated to supervise the kids. An emergency with the kids could leave the Yorkie unsupervised, and it's not worth the risk. If you do have that level of supervision, then I personally would introduce the Yorkie to them right away. Do it one at a time and watch the Yorkie closely to make sure it's not overly agitated. With proper supervision, it could be a great socialization exercise. |
O yes, im very strict about the kids being around any pet, I have three guinea pigs also, there is never a time when there running around by any pet, so there will never be a time for it to even be possible that they could fall on him or something, lol. And he is going to be in a playpen or his crate, and if not those two then on a leash at my side.:) |

Are you in Anchorage? We have an active little-dog meetup group if you're interested. We meet indoors on Monday nights in the winter. In summer, we meet on weekends outside. PM me if interested. |

my .02, sounds like you've had experience with kids and small animals. Just remember that yorkies (or little dogs) tire easily so meeting and greeting kids may get tiresome for the pup. A lot of activity for the pup may tucker him out very quickly. I would for sure have a very quiet place for him to be, away from loud noises, not too, too quiet but somewhere where he feels safe and secure. Good luck! |
