Anyone used belly band for pad training? I am in the middle of pee wee pad training my 16-week old Yorkie. It's our 4th day, and he still makes mistake 50-60% of the time if I let him find his spot on his own. We live in an apartment building with a thin wall, and our neighbor is very sensitive about the noise. So we haven't fully crated him, but confined him to an exercise pen area. I'm spending most of the time with him, so I've been keeping my eagle eye on him for the most time. When he does his biz on the pad, we praise and give him a small portion of his favorite treat. Now he knows when he has done it well, so he gets super excited to show off and get his praise / treats. However, when I turn my back for few seconds, he could easily make a mistake on another spot. He seems to be getting what's right and wrong much better compared to his 1st day of training, but I think he's still very confused. Since our place is fully carpeted, I really don't want to miss any spot and I have been cleaning immediately after mistake. Keeping an eye on a little puppy for all day long with little sleep is more tiring than I thought, so I was wondering if anyone uses belly band as a diaper. This way, both of us can have more freedom without worrying about wetting the carpet, at least when I go take a shower or sleep (although he's never peed on my bed, I have to sleep light to make sure that he can get to his pad whenever needed). Are there any concerns to using the belly band while pad training? I'm thinking of putting the belly band during his free time, and when it's time to go pee (keeping to the 7-day potty training schedule), I will take the band off and take him to the pad. |
We use a belly band to keep Noah from marking. He is not nuetered (and before everyone goes nuts and freaks out, i am not getting him nuetered and i have my reasons) and has decided to mark the door and gate in my dining room, where they have free roam priveleges. When he goes to the pad and lifts his leg, we still praise and treat because he's doing it right, even if the belly band is catching it. I usually take his band off at night, but our three are crated (baby gate across the door of our downstairs half bath with a puppy pad, bed and water bowl) to sleep and he is really good about not marking in there. I don't know that a band will help with the pad training per se, I would think it would confuse him because there is no consistency. He will think he can go anywhere because hes not being brought back to the pad every time. Noah was pad trained before we started using the band. |
Im using the belly bands on my yorkie, its working so far |
Do you take it off regularly to allow him to eliminate? |
yes, I take it off of him when i take him outside to potty |
Thanks for the reply! :) Does he often pee on his belly band? I've heard dogs don't like the wet feeling, so they are discouraged to pee when wearing the band. However, I'm still concerned that Choco may get confused, so I'm planning on using it only when I can't pay full attention to him. |
yes he has once or twice, the very 1st time I put the belly band on him he wet in it, as it was new to him and he didn't know what was going on. lol I would constantly take him outside he did his business but also would still find pee in the house, so the belly band has been a big help, no more messes in the house.. |
