Dog potty fire hydrant I am seriously considering getting a small fire hydrant to put on the potty pad because Toby is hiking his leg on the potty pad so I have to "run it up the wall" to keep him from peeing on the baseboard. I am having trouble finding a small fire hydrant on line. Does anyone know any good websites to find something like this? I tried eBay to no avail. Petco has one online for $11.99 but it is only 7" tall. Would that be tall enough? Toby has fairly long legs and weighs about 8.5 lbs. Thanks for your help! |
I got Dudley one from Foster & Smith. He never used it and it was suppose to be treated with something that attracted them to it. He just kept on tee teeing on his papers. lol!!! |

I just looked at it on their website. It is only a little over 7" tall too. Maybe that's the standard size. |
I've heard of people using filled soda bottles set in the center of the pad... that would give you an idea on the correct size before you spend any money on one.:D |

I bought a plastic fire hydrant filled with dog chew toys right after I got Maxie. We put it on a set of pee pads and called it "inspiration Station". It worked for awhile -- but then back to pee'ing at will. It was cute, though, and worth a shot. Good luck. Potty training seems to be the #1 reason male Yorkies end up in shelters. It can be done -- but you must be persistant and relentless in your monitoring of your baby. They want to please, but if they're allowed to roam, they will pee where it's convenient. If monitored, they seem to 'get it'... and find the pee pads. |
Toby is five years old (we got him as a rescue from a puppy mill but he'd been in a foster home for a year). He definitely knows he's supposed to go outside. All weekend long he will do fine (except he will still poop on the pad on the weekends for some strange reason). We have had him two years so this is not "new" to him. It's just very frustrtating, especially since he knows better the little stinker! |
Training isnt going well.. it's getting cold and miserable up here and it's hard for me to get us both dressed and out in time. He hates the snow, gets easily distracted on the street and winds up 'dragging' me home and then promptly does his business inside. He wont pee or poo anywhere else BUT in our house or on our street, so I guess that's a good thing. Probably wasnt the best idea to get a puppy going fall into winter, but what's done is done. Tried the soda bottle hydrant.. actually a champagne bottle, which terrified him and he stopped going to that pad. Was a cheap champagne.. maybe I should try something imported ? :>( He does lift his leg on the artificial Xmas tree, so maybe we'll leave it up until April, when the weather finally turns. BTW, what's a bellyband? |

It's not to be used for housebreaking it's more to be used if you dog is unneutered and marks. Marking and peeing are different. A dog will try to mark to leave his imprint, he pees when his bladder is full. Joey’s neutered, but I use them if we are going to someone else's house who has a dog. I don't want Joey leaving his scent; we then take them off if the dogs go outside. |
