Tough potty training question. I know there are a million questions regarding potty training. I just have a question RELATED to potty training. Paulie uses the bathroom outside, but I have to know when to take him out. He doesn't know how to ask to go out. He waits, but he has an accident once in a while right by the door... but he never gave any indication that he needed to go out. Some dogs prance in front of the door, some stand by it and bark, some stand by it and stare at the door. Paulie doesn't do anything? He just can't hold it anymore so walks to the door and pees? This isn't a regular thing for him, I have him on a food schedule so I know when to take him out, and he will wait until I take him out... I'm just not picking up on any signs that he needs to go out? Any suggestions on HOW to get him to ASK? I'm kind of at a loss. Thanks in advance |
Potty Issue I just joined Yorkie Talk too, but I have learned from pup, that sometimes it works to tie a bell to the "potty exit," and train them to ring the bell when they need to go. Right before you take the puppy out to potty say "potty," and ring the bell, then see if your puppy will ring it. Eventually, your puppy will hopefully ring the bell when he needs to go out. I also leave newspaper by that door in case we can't get out in time. Even when I am gone, he goes on that newspaper 80% of the time and I leave him out with my other dog all day ( of course you must be cautious with this until you know how your pup will react!). I am very lucky to have a dog (she's about 10 months) who will at least sit by the door and kind of sniff around or just stare at us til we get up and take her out lol BUT, no barking or anything which can be frustrating. I HAVE heard of a technique where you can train your dog to use a bell to let you know they have to go out. Here's a video of someone having their dog do this... I'm sure there is more information you can find on this somewhere. Good luck! |

Our Holly does pretty much the same thing. She never (knock on wood) pees in the floor. She always hold it for outside but she will poop in front of the door. I put a puppy pad out for now in hopes that since she does so well with peeing she will eventually get the pooping. |
We use the bell ! Cooper would constantly pee on the rug by the door because we could not see the door to go out from our family room. After he got the part about what he was outside for , we started using the bell and he got it within a week! Now he you can tell when he REALLY has to go because he hits that bell hard! |
Maggie will come up to me in a way that is a little different than usual. I can't explain it but it's just different from when she just wants to be picked up and be held. It's like she stands on her hinds and paws at me. My 2 are not really barkers so it's a guessing game. Hot Rod will kinda of start roaming in a way that I just know, he's always done that however. Maybe you can put them on a schedule so they will be able to at least get used to that and when they need to go, you can pick up on something that thay do (??) |
You could try rewarding your pup with a treat when he does a potty outside... that way, when he has to go, he will want you to see it so he can get his treat, so he may start to let you know in advance. PS: Yorkies have been known to learn to ring bells to go potty, then take it one step further and will ring the bells to go out to play, lol! Quote:

Mina will act panicky,which means that she needs to be able to see her person to tell her. One of the poodles will paw and stare at you. If you dont move fast enough he will sit at the back door and LEAN on it. Everyone else just waits for one of the other two to tell us. |
I have put Paulie on a more predictable feeding schedule and we haven't had any accidents since. I am still going to use the bell though. I've noticed he will come to me and stand on his back legs and paw at me also when he has to go out. It's the cutest thing in the entire world LOL. So he has me trained now, but I worry when I'm not home, that he won't be able to communicate his need to go out. to every one else. So I will be buying the bell... also I kinda just like the idea of teaching him a new trick and spending that time with him. Thanks for all the great advice and sharing :o) |
Highly recommend bell system. Put nose or paw to bell, give "potty" command, and out the door! Do not return until deed is done! Then treat! |
Sophie Kate will not ask and she is afraid of the bell (yes, I know she is a whimp). We have a very strict schedule we follow, if for some reason the schedule is broken she will potty on the floor. Everyone told me to watch for a sign and now 3 years later I am stil watching and still cannot figure out her signal. |
