yucky eye boogers
 
help my yorkie has those black yucky eye boogers, what are they caused from? what can i do to get rid of them there vert gose and shes a lovely dog i want them gone any ideas????? :confused:

There are many causes for eye discharge. Some people here have had luck fighting the boogies by switching foods or sources of water. A few people have had good results with bottled distilled water for babies.

Max doesn't have staining eye boogies, but Teddy does, so I am looking for a solution too. I have used happytails eye pads in the past and they helped. Need to order those again. :)

In general, keep the area clean and dry as possible. The dark stains are yeast and yeast thrives on moisture.

Silver has them bad and we just try to comb her eyes every day and wipe them off so it doesn't get matted. I'd try changing her water to distilled but I read somewhere else on here that it can be bad because it doesn't have the same minerals(?) or something like that.

I have read that too and I don't understand the argument behind the warning. Filtered water, which most people drink, also has most minerals removed. Distilled water has been around for centuries and has long been considered a life-saver in areas where safe drinking water is hard to come by.

I would think that the minerals that we and our dogs get from food would be sufficient for our needs.

Agreed.

Gerber Baby Water, and a food switch worked wonders for us. I tried just distilled water but the baby water is what worked for us.Taycie's face has been tear stain free since July.

I talked with my vet about this, she had no problems with it. It works for us and It keeps her face looking great.

I switched Macy to Gerber Purified water about a month ago. I was doing distilled water but some people warned about distilled water on here. I bought some Gerber Purified water at Walmart and it made a world of difference in her in just a week. I also asked the vet about it and she said there isn't a problem with using this water and she was very interested in our results because she has a lot of people asking the same question about eye boogies. We have a filtration system for our water but her face was still damp all the time. Now, her face stays nice and dry. I also make sure the hair is not dangling in her eyes.

Hmmm... that's a good thing to know about the Gerber water. Jackson has not had eye boogies in a long time. Well, major ones. He will get the normal occasional crusty after a long nights sleep but nothing runny or goopy or terrible. Certain foods increased his.

But we have well water at our house and honestly, our water system is just gross. I don't drink the water here and I feel kind of bad making him drink it... though of course he doesn't seem to mind. I will give him bottled water if we have them around. But was considering buying those jugs of water for both him and I to drink... I wonder if there would be any benefit to the Gerber baby water stuff vs. Food Lion brand jug of water or something.

wow guys thanks for all the tips i will try theses her boogies are very very bad and if i try to pull them out it hurts her alot so thanks again i will see what works for sugar :)

To make de-booging a painless process, use a wet cotton ball (luke-warm water) to wet down the corner of the eye and into the mustache first. A lot of the boogies will come off with the cotton ball. Use a tiny flea comb (prongs placed very close together) to comb downward and remove the remaining gook. Finish by blotting with a dry cotton ball.

If the boogies are really bad, do this twice a day and they won't build up.

Sometimes hair in the eyes or seasonal allergies will make eye drainage worse. If the drainage is thick and green or yellow, see your vet.

I don't have a Food Lion around here so I'm not sure if it's the same thing but I get the Gerber water at WalMart for $1.00 a jug. I have not tasted the water but I see a lot of new mothers buying it to mix with their baby's formula. It's called Gerber Pure and it's labeled as purified water.

Now if I can just find something to make her Frito feet smell better!!!

Filtered water doesn't have minerals removed; you have to distill water to remove minerals. Filtered water usually just removes chemicals, depending on the type of filter you use, it removes chlorine and fluoride among other things. Many people say distilled water works pretty good with puppies, who are teething, but long term use of distilled water may have the dog lacking in certain minerals. We used a distilled water for Joey when he was a puppy, and we used the Gerber baby safe water, which can be purchased for $1.00 a gallon, by the way, purified water and distilled water are the same, all minerals are removed. The reason we use baby safe water, is some distilled water isn’t safe for drinking, it’s for use for steam irons. The distilled baby water did elliminate Joey’s tearing and about once a month I would try regular filtered tap water and at about 11 months of age was able to make the switch to regular filtered tap and he had no tearing.

Thank you for setting that straight. I see now that my Brita only partially removes some minerals.

Wouldn't a proper diet provide all necessary minerals though? Is there something unique to water?

I would think so, but I have read that humans shouldn't drink distilled water for long periods of time and I'm assuming the same thing would be true of dogs. However, our dog’s food is probably more balanced than our own diet. If distilled or purified water is helping than I would simply ask my vet about it. Oh and another thing to complicate matters, some purified water has minerals added. :p

Like the one Jennifer Aniston promotes, Smart Water? :p

I served my boys Aquafina and some other bottled waters for a long time and I noticed they weren't drinking enough. They prefer tap water. :rolleyes:

Joey's definitely interested in it, he knows that's where I throw all his golden nuggets, but he’s too short to do anything about it. :p

i think eye discharge/ buggers , what ever you want to call it is something yorkies are prone to, don't think there is one thing that causes it specifically. glad to read about how to get rid of them, i will try the flea comb, any other ideas??? big issue for my ollie & i know i should clean his eyes daily, but i don't, not because i am lazy, but because he hates it. any other ideas. warm water dosen't seem to be enough if you let it go. any ideas would be great thanks!!:confused:

Our malti-poo had this problem about a year ago, and we talked to the vet about it. He suggested a product called "Angel Eyes", which you can buy at petmsart. It is a powder that you mix into their food, that helps to clear up their nasal passage. Our vet explained to us that their nasal passage way gets clogged (think of a stuffy nose and ears on us humans), and so their "snot" has only one way to go, through their eyes.

He gave us the active ingredient in Angel Eyes, called Tylan powder, to try out. We put 1/8 tsp into Tucker's food bowl, which is filled with about 1/2 cup of food. Within the month, his eye boogers were completely gone, and he hasn't had a problem since. Also, he face no longer stinks!

Yeah, I've heard others say they've had great results with Tylan Powder or Angel Eyes too. I've often wondered if some dogs had a low grade infection. Tylan Powder is a mild antibiotic, and it's I find it interesting that your vet said about clearing up the nasal passage. I guess it all depends what is causing the tearing, sometimes it's just an allergy to an ingredient in a food, and sometimes it’s something else, but I'm glad you found success with this. I know some Maltese owners use it all the time, but it's great you had success after only a month.

Cailee has had wet, tearing eyes since we got her at 3 mo old. Our Vet said it could be allergies, teething or other things. I put her on Angel Eyes -- didn't do anything. She's now almost 7 months old and about 6 weeks ago I changed her food to no grain, TOTW. So far no change. BTW, she and Cody drink only bottled water. Cody, on the other hand had eye boogers,actually little crispy critters occasionally in the morning but not a big problem.

So, what should I do now?

I would say it's most likely teething at the age. Distilled water worked for Joey, when he was teething, and this is not the same as bottled water, it must be distilled and have no minerals in it. Switching to no grain doesn't necessarily eliminate tearing, most dogs aren't allergic to grain, and it could be anything in their food that's causing the problem. I agree with you the crispy critters aren't as alarming as the eye drainage, and constant wetness because that can lead to a yeast infection. One food (Blue Wilderness) caused excessive tearing in Joey, but I never did find out the ingredient that he was sensitive to, all I know is you can get rid of it, but finding what works for each dog is a challenge.

I have been using a warm saline solution and a cotton ball on Bubba's eye boogies. I follow that up with flea comb, then more saline just for a clean rinse. It has worked really well.

To get them used to it; I would do just a quick dampening, praise him and let him go play with a toy, pick him up 5 minutes later, do the same thing. Did it this way for a couple of days, now he will sit and let me do it, I just talk him through it. I still try to be very quick, I can imagine its uncomfortable for him.

After reading all the posts, I am definitely going to start him on the Gerber water tomorrow and keep everyone posted. It's great that this has worked for other yorkies and I hope it will work for Bubba ;)

Lol if you have a still! You are boiling the water and the steam goes through tubing where it turns into water on the other end. The water you are boiling is left with all the minerals, while the water on the other end has no minerals because minerals can't turn into a gas like water can. So you're not boiling to get read of bacteria, you are trying to have water that is mineral free. Gerber sells some distilled water for baby’s bottles, and the gallon size is one dollar at Walmart.
