peeing in the crate at night Hello, My three mo.th old yorkie all of a sudden starts peeing in her crate at night. I have put the divided in to reduce space and she still pees and then sits in it. Every morning she smells of pee. I stop her water at 8p Any other suggestions? Help |
When you say all of a sudden, how long has it been going on (and how long have you had her?). If she's been doing well for a while and suddenly can't hold it, I would take her to the vet to rule out any medical issues such as bladder infection. Otherwise, at 3 months old, she has a teeny, tiny, bladder and may not be able to hold it all night. You may have to start taking her out in the middle of the night to empty her bladder. Don't withhold water earlier than 2 hours before her bedtime - at that age, you can risk dehydrating her. BTW, how much does she weigh? (Sorry so many questions) |
I have had her for a month. When I brought heer home she would never go in there. Now almost every time I crate her she goes unless i keep taking her out. I used to leave a wee wee pad in there but she rips it apart. She is dong well on her potty training, but sometimes I have to make her sit there until she pees, I allow her to back n forth between her bowl n pad until she goes. Not sure how much she weighs, I'm told she is a teacup. I will be careful to not take away her water to early. Thanks |
You said she was a "teacup"? How old was she when you got her? Many times, little dogs, especially those associated with the "teacup" name are given away way too early and have a tendency to be a little bit harder to train. Where did you get your baby? Gizmo, my dog, is from a BYB and used to pee in his crate as well. Many times, when a dog goes to the bathroom in his crate, and is just okay with laying in it is because they were used to doing that. BYB's and puppymills, unlike breeders, leave their pups in cages for hours and hours on end, so the dog just get used to going to the bathroom in their space and laying in it. |
She was 10 weeks when I got her. She comes from a breeder. she hates whrn she is wet n cries. I guess I left her I. To long, my hubby leaves her out during the day, we work opposite shifts. So when he sleeps he allows her to run the bedroom. I on the other hand feel she has too much freedom |
It sounds like she might be getting confused, since the pee pad was in the crate for a while. You may have to start fresh with the potty training routine. Also, you should decide if you want her to be potty pad trained, or outdoor trained then concentrate on one or the other. The potty pads are a nice backup to avoid accidents on the floor, but if outdoors is where she needs to be going, concentrate only on that. |
Ten weeks is a little young, standard is usually twelve weeks, but it's not as bad as alot of dogs I see out there. One thing that you could to is get potty pads that are washable and shread proof. One of the YT member Cathy makes them: Washable and reusable dog and puppy pee pads, belly bands, and diapers by T. Bumpkins & Co. Other than that, it'll take a little more effort on your part with being consistant with when she goes out. Welcome to the joys of puppyhood, it'll get better. :) |
Does she cry to be let out of her crate? |
It sounds like your puppy is confused. I'm confused reading the schedule! Consistency is key. Crating at night is a good idea, but have you tried a potty trip mid-night to see if that helps? |
The crate should only be big enough to turn around and stand up. Also, you need to clean the crate and bedding with an enzyme cleaner to eliminate the urine smell, otherwise they are compelled to go in the same spot. Thirdly, I had to take Joey out every couple of hours at first. They can’t hold it for very long, don’t expect too much too soon, it’s a puppy, not a dog. :) |
Yes, for a short while then she goes to sleep. |

How long are you expecting her to hold it over night? My ZoE is a year old and completely potty trained, but she wakes me up every night like clockwork around 3am to go pee. She goes straight to her pad, pees, and then will go right back to sleep til morning. |
