Two dog training woes I'm having trouble training Bella with my older dog Barney around. He knows what we're doing and will bark and disturb Bella as I train her in the bathroom. My trainer advised me to practice outside, but it's cold here in NJ so that's not a good place to work. I really want her to be a therapy dog and don't want to give up but I'm frustrated and don't know what else to do. Can anybody suggest how they trained dog #2 when they already have another dog?:confused: |
I trained them separately but not outside but Ive never trained one to be a therapy dog so I dont know the reasoning that trainer suggested that |
I have the same problem. Any way you can crate one to allow for some privacy? You also might take Bella to a Petco or other place that allows dogs and train there. It's great practice for the work she'll be doing -- lots of distractions. Pick a time when you don't expect to run into a lot of other dogs and find a corner and work on what you would be working on at home. Hopefully, the place you pick is close and you can do it often. OMG!!! Yes!!! I'm trying to train 2 yorkie pups at the same time. What fun ( rolls eyes) lol. I train them both together, first giving them the sit comand, the one the stay while I work with the other. It doesn't always work but they are learning that their turn is next, so it gets easier with time. I don't always give them the same command. So you don't always have to be training the same thing, but even though Barnie won't be a work dog, you can still train him some of the commands. He'll have fun learning new things and it may help Bella pick up faster. If I start getting frustrated I take a time out for a little play. If I keep it fun we all enjoy it more. Sissy picked up the paw very fast, she can give paw, shake and give me five. Brodo is having a hard time, he will pick up his paw but dosnt unite know to put it in my hand. Sissy will watch a few tries, then she comes over and puts HER paw in my hand... As if to say Jeeze Bro put your foot in her hand!!! This isn't rocket science!!! LOL |
Same problem here. Cody, my almost 2 year old, is wise to all the training tricks. Even pee pad training Cailee (now 6 months old) is a challenge. When he sees Cailee go to the pee pad, he runs to the kitchen counter (where the treats are kept for Cailee being a "good girl"). So I dutifully give Cailee her treat (Cody standing at attention next to her -- by the way he beat her to the kitchen to line up for the treat). I feel bad not giving Cody a treat so I make him go thru some of his routine tricks, sit, shake, lay down, stay; then he gets the treasurered treat. But when I get to the more serious training,I have to take Cailee outside because Cody wants to jump in to "earn" the treat. I'm sure I've created a monster with Cody, and it sure makes it more difficult with Cailee. |
