Roaming while Home Alone So I was wondering, do you let your dog be uncrated while you away for a certain period of time? and if so, how old was your dog when you started to do that. My apartment is really small and when I'm gone for a couple hours, I just put up the x-pen but I was thinking about giving him freedom to roam the living room, which isn't that much bigger. Just to get him used to being alone in a bigger area. And then eventually, he'll get access to all the other rooms. Little bit at a time though. What are your thoughts? |
1st off my pup is not crate trained, he is pee-pad trained so this may be unrelatable. I used to gate my dog off in the kitchen area... then when he got older I decided he can roam where he wants. No longer a puppy so he's not interested in getting into things he shouldn't so it works for me! I would say my dog was 2-3 years old when I stopped gating him off. |
I am waiting until Jimmy gets past the chewing stage before I let him roam free. My other dog has freedom to do anything he wants in the house. I do keep the bedroom closed since he likes to steal undies out of the laundry :o |
Neither of my girls are crate trained. We got Rosie first and when she was potty training she stayed in the master bath and bedroom only. Once she was trained she had full run of the house. Mikki has had full run since we got her in July. I do put pee pads down for Mikki. I think Rosie was between 9 months old to a year old when she had full run. |

So when you do give them full reign of the house/room/whatever, about how long are you gone for? |
Brutus is not crate trained either. He started out in our 4-Season room but he has now graduated to part of the house. We have gated off the other rooms, but he has access to the family room, kitchen and a long hallway. I think he has been in the house for about 4 weeks and has done great. I don't even use potty pads anymore. I think that they all have such little personalities that it may be hard to judge off of our experiences. Give it a try and see what happens. Good Luck, it may be much easier than you think. :) |
We are gone all day at work. I have a college age son so he is home from time to time during the day to take Brutus out to potty and do the mid-day meal. This has made is much easier for us. Hopefully by the time the son leaves Brutus will be down to 2 meals a day and can hold the potty for an entire work day. He will be 6 months old on Sat. |
I'm gone for about 8 hours a day. Jimmy stays in the crate and ChiChi roams free. I've left ChiChi in the house for 18 hours or more and he won't dare pee in the house. I wouldn't blame him if he did! I've never had problems with my pets peeing in the house before though. Jimmy seems to be the toughest dog I've had to teach to potty train though. Oh and ChiChi is Chihuahua/Affenpinsher (terrier) mix. |

We do need to get him on an eating schedule cause right now, we just leave his food out all the time and he nibbles on it throughout the day. The breeder told us to have fresh water and food for him all the time so we haven't gotten him on a set breakfast/lunch/dinner schedule but obviously, as a lot of YTers have noted, that getting him on a set eating schedule helps with knowing when he has to potty and if he isn't feeling well. I think I'll try easing him into it after the holidays and after his neuturing which is mid January. Maybe try it for February. I do have class once a week after work on Wednesdays but I can do the daycare those days so he has interaction throughout the day. You guys are a huge help! |
Jackson's been roaming free since he was 6 months old. He had my whole back room (which is bascially the size of an apartment) by 5 months. He got the whole house at probably 6 1/2 months. First, we had an ex-pen, then he was gated in my bedroom, then we moved to my whole back room part of the house (bedroom, bathroom, living room) and then he got the WHOLE house. So we did do it in steps but he just always proved to be very reliable. |
Mine always had full reign of the house after they were potty trained and I knew they wouldn't chew into anything harmful, like an electrical cord or cable. |
Riley has full run of the bedroom at about 9 months old.... I would keep the bedroom door open, but had a plastic baby gate in the doorway. He did so well, that I gave him full run of the whole place about a month later. He is soooooooooooooooooooo GOOD! :D I keep a doggie litter box in the corner with peepee pads in it, so if he HAS to go, he uses it. Never had any problems!! :) |
ZoE's had the run of the house since she was about 4-5 months old. She's pad trained though, so she can go potty whenever she wants while I'm gone. She's never gone potty anywhere other than her pads and was very easy to train. |
