Nip! Nip! Nip! Hey guys! Just wondering...what age do Yorkies get past that puppy chewing stage? We caught Katie Scarlett chewing on furniture for the first time yesterday. I got some of that bitter apple spray and she hasn't been back to the 'scene of the crime' yet. LOL. Do they chew like this all their life or is she still in the teething stage? She is a little over 4 months. Thanks! |
Harry's only 13 months old - so don't really know with Yorkies whether it's a 'whole of the life' thing! :) All I do know is, with every other breed I've had - once the puppy teeth are out, the chewing generally calms down (thank goodness! ;) ) I know you give her bullysticks etc, so offering the alternative is the best and most effective way to go. The trouble is, the 'scene of the crime' often changes once you've sprayed the bitter apple - so keep on keeping a close eye!! Good luck! Sally + Harry x |
Oh, 4 months is a tough teething age! I remember clearly from 4 - 10 months, Rocco would also create "crime scenes" :D. Rest assured, this too shall pass. In addition to offering healthy chewing alternatives to furniture, now is the time to teach Katie Scarlett (cute name!) what you do NOT want her to chew...they do learn very quickly. Good luck!! |
Expect it to last until all the primary teeth are gone. Keep lots of "good" chew things available for her. During the teething stage around here Rhett and Scarlett chewed on baseboards, a rocking chair, the rug, the window casing and even a spot of dry wall behind the rocker :eek: Unfortunately for me, they both enjoyed the taste of bitter apple. |

Thanks guys for all your help! I will make sure I have plenty of appropriate toys our for her to chew and watch her closely. I think she isn't afraid of the bitter apple as well. I sprayed it on this faux plant that we have in the house that she loves to attack and last night she ignored it. But today, she was right back to her wacky antics. That little bugger! She's nearly stripped all the leaves off of one stem! Of course I go after her and grab the leaf, but it can't be re attached. I'm gonna have a bald faux house plant! I'm still working on teaching her what she is not allowed to nip. I need to place more coke cans filled with pennies around the house. That works like a charm so far. :) |

I would highly recommend bully sticks. Not the smelly pet store ones, but the organic, U.S. non-odor ones. Also, the himalayan chews. NEVER rawhide of any type, and always supervise the little ones when they chew anything since choking is always a danger. |
Rosie's chosen crime scenes were mu 20 year old son's prized wooden rocking horse from when he was a baby and my dining room chars and table legs. :eek: She had them both well chewed before I realized she was even doing it! Don't worry, it will absolutely pass. Just watch and keep the bully sticks flowing and one day you will realize she is no longer interested. ;) I would say Rosie was nearly one. |
